Average Natural Gas Bill: By Month, by State, and Per Therm
Figures checked October 30, 2026 against primary sources
A residential natural gas customer in the US paid about $863 for the year in 2024, or $72 a month, based on Energy Information Administration (EIA) data on how much gas homes used and what it cost. The monthly bill is anything but flat: using EIA's monthly figures, the typical customer's bill ran about $184 in January 2026 and about $38 in August 2026. Where you live matters as much as the season: 2024 bills ranged from about $44 a month in New Mexico to $145 in Alaska.

The Short Answer
- Average gas bill, 2024: about $72 a month ($863 a year) per residential customer, from 59.5 thousand cubic feet (Mcf) of gas at an average $14.50 per Mcf.
- Last 12 months (September 2025 to August 2026): roughly $1,023 per customer, or about $85 a month on average.
- Peak month: January 2026, about $184. Lowest: September 2025, about $38 (August 2026 was also about $38).
- Price in 2025: $15.34 per Mcf, about $1.48 per therm, up from $14.50 in 2024.
- Highest 2024 bills: Alaska, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York. Lowest: New Mexico, South Dakota, Florida, Louisiana.
These are averages per gas customer, not per household. About half of US households have no gas bill at all, so an all-household average (like the $41 a month in our average utility bills breakdown) comes out lower. If you have gas service, compare yourself with the figures on this page.
Average Gas Bill by Month
EIA publishes the national residential price and the volume delivered to homes every month. Dividing the volume by the number of residential customers gives the gas a typical customer used, and multiplying by the price gives a typical bill.
| Month | Price per Mcf | Price per therm | Gas used per customer (Mcf) | Typical bill |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| September 2025 | $24.70 | $2.38 | 1.5 | $38 |
| October 2025 | $19.34 | $1.86 | 2.9 | $57 |
| November 2025 | $15.07 | $1.45 | 6.4 | $96 |
| December 2025 | $14.09 | $1.36 | 11.2 | $158 |
| January 2026 | $13.96 | $1.35 | 13.2 | $184 |
| February 2026 | $14.95 | $1.44 | 9.8 | $147 |
| March 2026 | $16.16 | $1.56 | 6.5 | $105 |
| April 2026 | $18.04 | $1.74 | 3.8 | $69 |
| May 2026 | $19.73 | $1.90 | 2.6 | $50 |
| June 2026 | $24.09 | $2.32 | 1.7 | $41 |
| July 2026 | $26.45 | $2.55 | 1.5 | $40 |
| August 2026 | $27.05 | $2.61 | 1.4 | $38 |
January 2026 cost the typical customer more than January 2025 (about $175), because the price was higher ($13.96 against $12.44 per Mcf), even though homes used a little less gas.
Winter vs Summer
Gas use in homes is driven by heating. In the three winter months from December 2025 through February 2026, the typical customer used about 34.2 Mcf and paid about $489, nearly half of the year's gas bill. In June through August 2026 the same customer used about 4.6 Mcf and paid about $119 for all three months.
The price per Mcf moves the other way. It was lowest in January ($13.96) and highest in August ($27.05). So a summer bill can show a high price per unit and still be the smallest bill of the year, because so little gas is used. When you judge whether your bill is high, compare the amount of gas used (in therms or Mcf) with the same month last year, not the dollar total with last month.
Price per Mcf and per Therm
EIA reports prices in dollars per thousand cubic feet (Mcf). Most utility bills charge per therm or per CCF (hundred cubic feet). EIA's conversion for 2025 is 1 Mcf = 10.37 therms, based on the average heat content of gas delivered that year. One CCF is a tenth of an Mcf.
- 2025 average: $15.34 per Mcf, about $1.48 per therm or $1.53 per CCF.
- 2024 average: $14.50 per Mcf, about $1.40 per therm or $1.45 per CCF.
Average Gas Bill by State
State bills differ by climate (how much heating a home needs) and by price. Alaska homes use the most gas, about 148 Mcf a year per customer, against about 22 Mcf in Florida and Hawaii. Hawaii has the highest price, at $48.88 per Mcf in 2024, but its homes use so little gas that the bill, about $88 a month, is lower than in 9 states and DC.
| State | Bill per month, 2024 | Bill per year, 2024 | Gas used per customer, 2024 (Mcf) | Price per Mcf, 2024 | Price per Mcf, 2025 |

Worked Example: Reading Your Own Bill
Hypothetical example, using EIA's national average prices. Your utility's rates differ.
A household heats with gas and uses 12 Mcf (about 124 therms) in January and 1.5 Mcf (about 16 therms) in July. At the national average prices, January costs 12 × $13.96 = $167.52 and July costs 1.5 × $26.45 = $39.68. The January bill is more than four times the July bill, even though the July price per Mcf is almost twice as high.
To budget for a full year, add up the last 12 bills and divide by 12. At the national figures in the monthly table that comes to about $85 a month. Many utilities offer a budget or level billing plan that charges a similar fixed amount each month and settles the difference once a year; ask yours whether it does.
Help Paying a Winter Gas Bill
The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps eligible households pay heating bills, including gas. Each state sets its own income limit and application window, and many open in the fall. Our LIHEAP guide has every state's income rule and where to apply. Your gas utility may also offer a payment plan or a hardship fund; ask before a bill goes past due.
Sources & Methodology
All figures come from the US Energy Information Administration's natural gas data, release of October 30, 2026, retrieved October 30, 2026. Bills are our calculation from EIA's published volumes, customer counts and prices; EIA itself does not publish an average bill.
- EIA, Average Residential Price, monthly and annual, by state, in dollars per thousand cubic feet.
- EIA, Natural Gas Delivered to Residential Consumers, monthly and annual, by state, in million cubic feet.
- EIA, Number of Natural Gas Residential Consumers, by state, latest year 2024.
- EIA, units and conversions FAQ: 1 Mcf equals 10.37 therms (2025 heat content).
Method: gas per customer = residential volume ÷ residential customers; bill = gas per customer × average residential price. Monthly bills use the 2024 customer count because EIA counts customers only once a year; the count grew by about 0.6% from 2023 to 2024, so recent monthly bills may be overstated by about that much.

FAQ
What is the average natural gas bill per month?
About $72 a month for a residential gas customer in 2024, based on EIA data. Over the 12 months to August 2026 it averaged about $85 a month, from about $38 in late summer to $184 in January.
Why is my gas bill so high in winter?
Heating. In January 2026 the typical customer used about 13.2 Mcf of gas, against about 1.4 Mcf in August. The winter months make up nearly half of the year's gas bill.
How much is natural gas per therm?
The 2025 national average was $15.34 per Mcf, about $1.48 per therm. Monthly prices ranged from $1.35 per therm in January 2026 to $2.61 in August 2026.
Which state has the highest gas bill?
Alaska, at about $145 a month in 2024, because homes there use far more gas. Massachusetts ($128) and Rhode Island ($126) follow. New Mexico has the lowest, at about $44.
Is there help with gas bills?
Yes. LIHEAP pays part of heating bills for eligible households; see our LIHEAP guide. Ask your utility about hardship funds and budget billing too.
