How to use the paycheck calculator

Choose salary or hourly, enter your pay and how often you are paid, pick your state and fill in the main lines of your Form W-4. Open "Deductions and more W-4 options" to add a 401(k), health insurance, tips, overtime, car loan interest or extra withholding. The calculator shows your take-home pay per paycheck and per year, and every amount withheld.

Take-home pay by salary

Paid every two weeks in a state with no income tax (for example Texas or Florida), 2026 W-4 with no adjustments, no pre-tax deductions:

$40,000$1,538.46$1,320.00$1,390.77

$200,000$7,692.31$5,727.96$6,127.73

Married filing jointly assumes one earner (Step 2 box not checked). In a state with an income tax, take-home pay is lower.

What comes out of your paycheck

  • Federal income tax. Withheld with the IRS percentage method for 2026 (Publication 15-T), based on your W-4.
  • Social Security: 6.2% of wages up to $184,500 in 2026.
  • Medicare: 1.45% of all wages, plus 0.9% once your wages pass $200,000 for the year.
  • State and local taxes and premiums, where they apply: state income tax, county or city income tax in states such as Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, New York and Pennsylvania, and disability and paid leave premiums in states such as California, New York, New Jersey, Washington, Massachusetts and Colorado.
  • Your deductions: 401(k), health insurance, HSA or FSA (before tax) and anything taken after tax.

2026 changes to withholding

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act made the current tax brackets and the larger standard deduction permanent and created new deductions, including the tips and overtime deductions for tax years 2025 through 2028. The 2026 Form W-4 lets you claim them in each paycheck instead of waiting for a refund: qualified tips (up to $25,000), the extra "half" of time-and-a-half overtime (up to $12,500, or $25,000 married filing jointly), qualified car loan interest (up to $10,000) and $6,000 if you are 65 or older, each with an income limit. For hourly pay with overtime, the calculator fills in the overtime amount for you. The standard deduction for 2026 is $16,100 for single filers, $24,150 for heads of household and $32,200 for married couples filing jointly.

About the data

Federal: IRS Publication 15-T (2026), Worksheet 1A and the 2026 annual percentage method tables; Form W-4 (2026); IRS Publication 15 (2026) for Social Security, Medicare and the treatment of 401(k) and cafeteria plan deductions. Frequently Asked Questions

How much is $65,000 a year biweekly after taxes?

About $2,092.60 every two weeks for a single filer in a state with no income tax, from $2,500.00 gross: $216.15 federal income tax, $155.00 Social Security and $36.25 Medicare, with a standard 2026 W-4 and no other deductions.

How is federal income tax withholding calculated?

Your employer annualizes your taxable pay, adjusts it for your Form W-4 (other income, deductions, and a standard amount of $8,600, or $12,900 if married filing jointly, unless the Step 2 box is checked), looks it up in the IRS annual percentage method table, divides by your number of paychecks, then subtracts your dependent credits and adds any extra withholding. This calculator follows that worksheet (IRS Publication 15-T, 2026) exactly.

What changed on the 2026 W-4?

The 2026 Form W-4 lets you account for new deductions on Step 4(b): up to $25,000 of qualified tips, up to $12,500 ($25,000 if married filing jointly) of qualified overtime premium, up to $10,000 of qualified car loan interest, and $6,000 if you are 65 or older, each subject to income limits. The child amount on Step 3 is $2,200 per child under 17, and there is now a checkbox to claim exemption from withholding.

Do tips and overtime still have Social Security and Medicare taxes?

Yes. The new deductions only lower federal income tax. Tips and overtime pay are still subject to Social Security and Medicare tax.

How much are Social Security and Medicare taxes in 2026?

You pay 6.2% for Social Security on wages up to $184,500 and 1.45% for Medicare on all wages. Employers also withhold an extra 0.9% Medicare tax on wages over $200,000 in the year.

Does a 401(k) contribution lower my taxes?

A traditional 401(k) or 403(b) contribution lowers the wages subject to federal income tax withholding, but not Social Security and Medicare. Health insurance premiums, HSA and FSA contributions taken through your employer's cafeteria plan lower both. A Roth 401(k) is taken after tax.

Which states does the calculator cover?

Federal taxes everywhere, plus full state calculations for all 50 states: the nine with no tax on wages, the flat-tax states and every graduated-rate state, with local taxes for every Pennsylvania municipality, Ohio school districts, New York City, Yonkers, Maryland and Indiana counties, Detroit, Philadelphia, St. Louis and Lexington (and a box for any other local rate), and state disability and paid leave premiums. Each state was checked against its own 2026 withholding guide. The District of Columbia is not included yet because it has not published its 2026 withholding method; for DC the result shows federal taxes only and says so.
