How to use the salary to hourly calculator

Enter your pay and choose whether it is per hour, day, week, two weeks, half month, month or year. The calculator converts it to every other pay period at once. Change the hours per week for part-time work, lower the paid weeks if you take unpaid time off, and add regular overtime hours to see what they are worth over a year. All figures are gross pay, before taxes and deductions.

The formulas

  • Yearly pay = hourly rate x hours per week x paid weeks per year.
  • Hourly rate = yearly salary / (hours per week x weeks worked).
  • Monthly pay = yearly pay / 12. Biweekly = yearly / 26. Semimonthly = yearly / 24. Weekly = yearly / 52.
  • Overtime = overtime hours x 1.5 x hourly rate, for non-exempt employees working more than 40 hours in a week.

Hourly pay and salary treat time off differently. If you are paid by the hour, unpaid weeks off lower your yearly income. A salary stays the same, so working fewer weeks, or longer weeks, changes what you effectively earn per hour instead.

Gross pay is not take-home pay

Everything here is before federal and state income tax, Social Security and Medicare, and deductions such as health insurance and 401(k) contributions, so your paycheck will be smaller. The paycheck calculator shows your take-home pay after all of them. To plan with your real numbers, put your take-home pay into the budget calculator, and see how much a raise would grow in a 401(k). If you are weighing a job in another city, compare the salary with the cost of living calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert an hourly wage to a yearly salary?

Multiply the hourly rate by the hours you work in a year. Full time is usually 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, or 2,080 hours, so $25 an hour is $25 x 2,080 = $52,000 a year. A quick shortcut: double the hourly rate and add three zeros ($25 becomes about $50,000), which slightly understates the exact figure.

How do I convert a salary to an hourly rate?

Divide the yearly salary by the hours you work in a year. At 2,080 hours, $60,000 a year is $60,000 / 2,080 = $28.85 an hour. If you regularly work more than 40 hours on a fixed salary, your real hourly rate is lower.

How much is $20 an hour a year?

$41,600 a year at 40 hours a week for 52 weeks (2,080 hours), or about $3,467 a month, before taxes.

What is the difference between biweekly and semimonthly pay?

Biweekly means every two weeks, 26 paychecks in most years. Semimonthly means twice a month, usually on fixed dates, 24 paychecks a year. The yearly total is the same, so each semimonthly check is a little larger than a biweekly one.

What is the federal minimum wage per year?

The federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour and has been since July 24, 2009 (U.S. Department of Labor). Full time, that is $15,080 a year. Many states and cities set a higher minimum, and the higher one applies.

How is overtime calculated?

Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, employees who are not exempt must be paid at least one and a half times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. At $20 an hour, overtime pays at least $30 an hour.

Why do federal jobs divide by 2,087 hours instead of 2,080?

By law (5 U.S.C. 5504(b)), the Office of Personnel Management computes federal hourly rates by dividing the annual rate by 2,087 hours. Years have 260, 261 or 262 workdays, and 2,087 is the average number of work hours per year over the calendar cycle, so a $100,000 federal salary works out to $47.92 an hour.
