1099 Tax Calculator
Estimate the federal tax on 1099 income for 2026: self-employment tax plus the extra income tax, how much of each payment to set aside, and your quarterly estimated payments.
How to use the 1099 tax calculator
Enter all the self-employment income you expect for 2026, whether or not it comes with a 1099, your business expenses, and any W-2 wages from a job. The calculator works out your self-employment tax and the extra federal income tax the 1099 income causes, the share of each payment to set aside, and the quarterly estimated payments. It compares your full 2026 federal return with and without the 1099 income, so the result reflects your real bracket.
Federal tax on 1099 profit in 2026
Single filer, no children, standard deduction, 2026 federal rules. At low incomes the earned income tax credit applies, which is why the total can be below the self-employment tax. "With a $60,000 job" adds W-2 wages, which pushes the profit into a higher bracket:
| 1099 profit | Self-employment tax | Total federal tax, no other income | Share | Total, with a $60,000 job | Share |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $10,000 | $1,413 | $749 | 7.5% | $2,399 | 24.0% |
| $20,000 | $2,826 | $2,951 | 14.8% | $5,447 | 27.2% |
| $30,000 | $4,239 | $5,181 | 17.3% | $8,496 | 28.3% |
| $50,000 | $7,065 | $9,732 | 19.5% | $14,593 | 29.2% |
| $75,000 | $10,597 | $15,495 | 20.7% | $22,215 | 29.6% |
| $100,000 | $14,130 | $22,365 | 22.4% | $30,087 | 30.1% |
| $150,000 | $21,194 | $37,608 | 25.1% | $44,502 | 29.7% |
Our arithmetic with the calculator. With W-2 wages the Social Security part of self-employment tax still applies until wages plus net earnings reach the $184,500 wage base for 2026.
How 1099 tax is figured
- Profit = 1099 income minus business expenses (Schedule C).
- Self-employment tax = 15.3% of 92.35% of profit: 12.4% Social Security on earnings up to $184,500 (less any W-2 wages) and 2.9% Medicare on all of it. Under $400 of net earnings there is none. A 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax applies above $200,000 ($250,000 joint).
- Income tax: profit, minus half the self-employment tax and usually a 20% qualified business income deduction, is added to your other income and taxed at the 2026 brackets after the standard deduction.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much tax do I pay on 1099 income?
Self-employment tax of 15.3% on 92.35% of your profit, plus federal income tax at your bracket on the profit after deductions. For a single filer with no other income, $30,000 of 1099 profit means about $5,181 of federal tax in 2026 (17.3%), most of it self-employment tax. State income tax is extra.
How much should I set aside from each 1099 payment?
Use the calculator with your expected yearly income: it shows the share of each payment to set aside for federal tax. Many people save 25% to 30% to cover state tax as well, but the right number depends on your profit and other income.
Do I need to pay quarterly estimated taxes?
If you expect to owe $1,000 or more for 2026 after withholding and credits, yes. The due dates are April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027. Paying at least 90% of this year's tax or 100% of last year's (110% if your AGI was over $150,000) avoids the underpayment penalty.
When will I get a 1099 for 2026?
Payers send Form 1099-NEC when they pay you $2,000 or more for services in 2026 (up from $600). Payment apps and marketplaces send Form 1099-K only if you have more than $20,000 and more than 200 transactions. You owe tax on the income either way.
What expenses can I deduct?
Ordinary and necessary costs of the business: supplies, software, the business share of your phone and internet, and car use at the standard mileage rate (72.5 cents a mile through June 30, 2026, and 76 cents from July 1) or your actual costs. Half of the self-employment tax and, for many people, the qualified business income deduction lower your income tax too.
