Swagbucks suits people who want to earn points from surveys, advertiser offers and receipts as well as from online shopping, all in one account. The one thing to know: you earn SB points, not cash, and Swagbucks says 1,000 SB is equivalent to $10 in value, but each reward in its Rewards Store has its own SB price. You redeem for PayPal cash, gift cards, prepaid Visa or Mastercard reward cards or donations.

How Swagbucks works
Swagbucks is a rewards program run by Prodege, LLC, and shopping is only one way to earn. Every activity pays SB points: shopping through the Shop & Earn page or the SwagButton extension, paid surveys and a Daily Poll, advertiser offers on the Discover page (trials, sign-ups, app or game milestones), games, searches on the Swagbucks search engine, Swag Codes and daily goals. Survey payouts are shown per survey, and Swagbucks says the more targeted a survey is, the higher it pays; you can be screened out partway through. Swagbucks says it has over 700 retailers in Shop & Earn and that over 15 million members have cashed out nearly $700 million. See how it compares in our cashback app comparison.
For shopping, SB is based on the net purchase (the subtotal minus tax, shipping, fees, gift wrap, non-Swagbucks coupons and returns) or is a flat SB amount, depending on the store. The purchase shows as pending within 30 minutes to 7 business days, and SB is awarded 32 to 75 days after the purchase; Amazon takes 32 to 45 days from shipment, and travel up to 75 days after the trip. Magic Receipts pays SB for chosen grocery and household products: pick the offer, buy it at the listed store, then upload a photo of the whole receipt in the app. You can also forward e-receipts from eligible online merchants within 10 days of purchase, up to 5 in any 7 days.
You redeem SB in the Rewards Store. Swagbucks says 1,000 SB is equivalent to $10 in value. A hypothetical member earns 1,000 SB in a month; at that stated rate it is worth $10, or 1,000 / 100 = $10. The store shows the SB price of each reward, and that price is what you pay, so check it before you redeem. PayPal cash takes 2 to 5 business days and needs a bank-confirmed PayPal account whose name and email match your Swagbucks account. Digital gift cards take minutes to 5 business days. The cash-out table below lists the main methods; Swagbucks also offers a Bitcoin crypto voucher, on which third-party network fees "typically range between 11 - 13%", and charity donations.
SB does not move between accounts, and the only cash route is the PayPal reward. Before you redeem, Swagbucks may ask for an image of your passport, driver's license or state ID, or for a phone or mail PIN. The terms let an account with no login, redemption or new earning for 12 months in a row be deemed inactive and closed, and closing an account cancels all unredeemed SB. Passive referral earnings do not count as activity.

Who Swagbucks fits, and who should skip it
A good fit if
- You will take surveys and complete offers as well as shop, and want all of it in one balance.
- You want a PayPal option rather than gift cards only.
- You buy groceries and will pick Magic Receipts offers before shopping.
- You log in at least once a year, which keeps the account active.
Look elsewhere if
- You only want cash back on online shopping: Rakuten says it lists 3,500+ stores and pays in dollars by PayPal or check.
- You want points for every grocery receipt without picking offers first: Fetch gives at least 25 points per eligible receipt, paid in gift cards.
- You do not want a service that may sell data about your browsing: read the privacy section below first.
Limitations to know
- Returning, exchanging or cancelling all or part of a purchase reverses the SB for it, and Swagbucks may ask for receipts before or after awarding shopping SB. [13]
- Shopping SB excludes tax, shipping, fees, gift wrap and coupons not from Swagbucks; some stores pay a flat SB amount instead of a share of the purchase. [2]
- Delayed-payment surveys can take several days to a couple of weeks to credit, and you can be disqualified partway through a survey. [5]
- E-receipts must come from your registered email within 10 days of purchase, with a maximum of 5 in any 7-day period. [4]
- The terms let Prodege change expiration rules or cancel all or part of a rewards program, including unredeemed rewards, without notice. [19]
- SB cannot be transferred to another account, and cancelling your account permanently cancels all unredeemed SB; support cannot restore it. [14]

- Pick Rakuten if you mainly shop online and want cash in dollars by PayPal or check at 3,500+ stores, Rakuten says.
- Pick Fetch if you want points on every eligible receipt without picking offers first and are fine with gift cards.
- Pick Ibotta if you shop for groceries and want earnings in dollars, cashed out by PayPal or bank transfer from $20.
- Pick Capital One Shopping if you want coupon testing and rewards that do not expire while the account is open.
Security and privacy
- Prodege collects what you provide (including uploaded receipts and survey answers), your purchase records, browsing and search history, and precise geolocation from its mobile apps. Its extensions and affiliate links can track your browsing on merchant sites and other websites. [20]
- The privacy policy says Prodege "may disclose or sell aggregate or individualized information about you", including personal information, your use of its sites, other websites you visit and geolocation. Its US state notice lists identifiers sold or shared and has a Florida and Texas notice that it may sell sensitive personal data. An opt-out is offered. [21]
- Swagbucks may require an image of your passport, driver's license or state ID, or phone verification, before crediting or redeeming SB. [19]
- SB can be voided or an account suspended for multiple accounts, bots or scripts, prohibited search or click patterns, or "an uncommon or excessive level of customer support". [15]
- The terms require binding individual arbitration of disputes, with a class action waiver. We found no FTC, CFPB or state attorney general action against Prodege or Swagbucks. [19]

Its terms require individual arbitration, and its privacy policy says it may sell information about you.
How does Swagbucks pay out?
You redeem SB in the Rewards Store for PayPal cash, gift cards, prepaid Visa or Mastercard reward cards, a crypto voucher or charity donations. PayPal takes 2 to 5 business days and gift cards minutes to 5 business days. There is no direct SB-for-cash exchange; the PayPal reward is the cash route.
What is the minimum to cash out on Swagbucks?
Each reward has its own SB price, shown in the Rewards Store, so the minimum depends on the reward you pick. We could not read current US prices from our location, so check the store before you start saving toward a reward. A monthly redemption limit also applies.
Do Swagbucks points expire?
SB has no set expiry date, but an account with no login, redemption or new earning for 12 months in a row may be deemed inactive and closed, and closing an account cancels unredeemed SB. The terms also let Prodege change expiration rules at any time.
Swagbucks vs Rakuten?
Swagbucks pays points for surveys, offers, games and receipts as well as shopping at over 700 retailers, Swagbucks says. <a href="/cashback-apps/rakuten/">Rakuten</a> is shopping only, at 3,500+ stores by its count, and pays in dollars four times a year. Swagbucks shopping SB takes 32 to 75 days; Rakuten Cash Back typically 3 to 14 weeks.
Do I pay tax on Swagbucks?
Swagbucks says it files Form 1099 with the IRS. Under its own policy, once you redeem $600 or more in a calendar year you must submit tax information to keep redeeming, except for PayPal and Gambit rewards. Its tax page lists bonuses, searches, surveys, receipts and most games as taxable earning types, and shopping and Discover offers as not taxable. That is Swagbucks' own classification; ask a tax professional about your case.
