FEDVIP 2027: Dental and Vision Premiums for Every Plan

FEDVIP is the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program. It lets federal and Postal employees, retirees and certain TRICARE-eligible people buy dental and vision insurance as a group, with no pre-existing condition limits. Enrollees pay the whole premium. For 2027 there are 11 dental and 5 vision carriers offering 31 plan options, and OPM puts the average premium increase at 1.0% for dental and 1.6% for vision. You can enroll, switch or cancel during Open Season, which ends at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on December 14, 2026.

2027 FEDVIP Dental Premiums

Dental premiums depend on where you live. Each carrier sorts ZIP codes into rating regions, and the same plan costs more in some regions than others. The table shows each plan option's lowest and highest biweekly premium across the regions where it is sold. Find your exact rate with OPM's rating region chart (next section).

Source: OPM, 2027 FEDVIP dental premium rate charts and 2027 dental rating region chart. Ranges cover only the rating regions each carrier uses in the region chart. PR, GU and VI are Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands; "international" is the chart's row for addresses outside the U.S. Self Plus One rates and monthly rates are in OPM's charts.

Every carrier offers a High and a Standard option, except Triple-S Salud, which offers only High. In every rating region, the High option costs more than the same carrier's Standard option. To see what each option covers, read the plan's brochure or use OPM's FEDVIP Plan Comparison Tool before you pick one.

New for 2027, OPM says a Compare Dental Service Costs Tool will be available through BENEFEDS.gov for current and prospective dental enrollees with a FEDVIP account. It is to give out-of-pocket cost range estimates for 75 of the most common dental services across all 11 dental carriers.

How Dental Rating Regions Work

OPM's 2027 dental rating region chart lists, for each state (or the first three digits of a ZIP code within a state), the rating region each carrier uses. Carriers do not share one map, so the same ZIP code can be in region 1 for one carrier and region 3 for another (in Alabama ZIP codes starting 356 to 358, for example, Humana uses region 3 and the other carriers that sell there use region 1). To find your rate:

  1. Open the rating region chart and find your state, then your ZIP code's first three digits if your state is split.
  2. Read the region number in the column for the carrier you want. "N/A" means that carrier has no rating region there.
  3. Find that region's row for the plan in the dental premium chart.

Who Can Enroll in FEDVIP

  • Employees: federal and Postal employees who are eligible for FEHB, and whose position is not excluded by law or regulation. You do not have to be enrolled in FEHB; being eligible is enough.
  • Retirees: annuitants who retired on an immediate annuity or for disability under CSRS, FERS or another federal retirement system. They do not have to be eligible for or enrolled in FEHB. FEDVIP has no 5-year rule like FEHB: an employee's FEDVIP enrollment continues into retirement however long they had it. If you retire under MRA+10 and postpone your annuity, FEDVIP ends; you can enroll again when the annuity starts.
  • Survivors and compensationers: survivor annuitants receiving an annuity, and people receiving OWCP compensation who cannot return to duty.
  • TRICARE-eligible people: uniformed services retirees and their families, including "gray-area" Guard and Reserve retirees under age 60, for dental; also for vision if they are enrolled in a TRICARE health plan. Active duty family members enrolled in a TRICARE health plan can get vision coverage.
  • Family members: your spouse and unmarried civilian dependent children under age 22. For TRICARE-eligible children the limit is under age 21, or under 23 for full-time students.

How and When to Enroll

  • Use BENEFEDS. You must enroll or change a FEDVIP plan through BENEFEDS (benefeds.gov, or 1-877-888-3337). You cannot enroll with the SF 2809 form or through Employee Express, PostalEase, EBIS, MyPay or Employee Personal Page.
  • Open Season or within 60 days. Enrollment happens during the annual Open Season. New and newly eligible employees can enroll within 60 days after they become eligible.
  • Enrollment carries over. If you are enrolled and do not change anything, your enrollment continues automatically into 2027, at the new premium. Unlike FSAFEDS, you do not have to re-enroll each year.
  • Cancelling is hard. OPM says opportunities to cancel FEDVIP are extremely limited; to cancel, you must do it during Open Season.
  • Three enrollment types: Self Only, Self Plus One (you and one eligible family member you specify) and Self and Family (you and all eligible family members, who must all be listed).
