Taxes on a Alabama paycheck

Alabama taxes wages at 2% to 5%, and lets you subtract the federal income tax withheld. Several cities and counties add an occupational tax; enter your local rate in the calculator. Your paycheck also has federal income tax, withheld with the 2026 IRS tables and your Form W-4, plus Social Security and Medicare.

How Alabama withholding is figured

  • Your employer annualizes your wages and subtracts a standard deduction ($3,000 single, $8,500 married, $5,200 head of family, shrinking above $25,999 to $2,500 / $5,000 / $2,500 at $35,500), the federal income tax withheld from you, a personal exemption ($1,500 single, $3,000 married or head of family) and $1,000 per dependent ($500 above $50,000, $300 above $100,000).
  • The rest is taxed at 2% on the first $500, 4% on the next $2,500 and 5% above ($1,000 / $5,000 for married), then divided by your number of paychecks.

Married filing jointly assumes one earner (W-4 Step 2 box not checked). The tables do not include local occupational taxes. A local rate you enter is applied to your pay before 401(k) contributions and after pre-tax health insurance (Medicare wages), the base most local wage taxes use; if you put a lot into a 401(k), check how your employer handles it.
