California Paycheck Calculator
Take-home pay in California for 2026: state income tax, state payroll premiums, federal income tax from the 2026 IRS tables, Social Security and Medicare, for salary or hourly pay.
Taxes on a California paycheck
California taxes wages at graduated rates from 1% to 12.3%, plus 1% on income over $1 million. Employees also pay 1.3% State Disability Insurance (SDI) on all wages. Your paycheck also has federal income tax, withheld with the 2026 IRS tables and your Form W-4, plus Social Security and Medicare.
How California withholding is figured
- Your employer uses the state's exact calculation method (Method B): if your wages are below a low-income threshold nothing is withheld; otherwise it subtracts a standard deduction, applies the tax rate table for your pay period and subtracts a credit of $168.30 a year for each allowance on Form DE 4.
- Withholding rates are 1.1 times the tax rates, from 1.1% to 14.63% on wages over $1 million.
- Married people whose spouse also works use the single tables ("Single or Married (with two or more incomes)" on the DE 4).
- SDI is 1.3% of all wages in 2026 with no wage cap. It applies to your 401(k) contributions but not to pre-tax health insurance through a cafeteria plan.

Married filing jointly assumes one earner (W-4 Step 2 box not checked). California does not follow the federal rules for health savings accounts: HSA contributions are taxable for California income tax, but the calculator treats all pre-tax deductions you enter as tax-free. The tables use the allowances that follow from your W-4 answers.
Hourly pay after taxes in California
40 hours a week, paid weekly, single filer:
| Hourly wage | Gross per week | Take-home per week | Take-home per year |
|---|---|---|---|
| $15.00 | $600.00 | $511.03 | $26,574 |
| $20.00 | $800.00 | $660.66 | $34,354 |

| $30.00 | $1,200.00 | $952.82 | $49,546 |
Working overtime? Choose "Hourly" in the calculator and add your overtime hours: the 2026 W-4 lets you count the extra half of time-and-a-half as a deduction, which lowers federal withholding.
