Taxes on a Maine paycheck
Maine taxes wages at 5.8% to 7.15%, plus a new 2% surcharge on income over $1 million ($1.5 million married) from 2026. Employees also pay up to 0.5% for Maine Paid Family and Medical Leave. Your paycheck also has federal income tax, withheld with the 2026 IRS tables and your Form W-4, plus Social Security and Medicare.
How Maine withholding is figured
- Your employer annualizes your wages, subtracts $5,300 for each allowance on Form W-4ME and a standard deduction ($12,850 single, $28,550 married, phased out above $102,250 / $204,550 of wages), and applies 5.8%, 6.75% and 7.15%, plus 2% on income above $1,000,000 ($1,500,000 married). The result is divided by your number of paychecks and rounded to whole dollars.
- Maine Paid Family and Medical Leave: the contribution is 1% of wages (0.5% for employers with fewer than 15 workers), and no more than 0.5% can come from the employee, up to the Social Security wage base.
