Taxes on a Maryland paycheck

Maryland taxes wages at 2% to 6.5%, and every county (and Baltimore City) adds a local income tax of 2.25% to 3.3%. Employers withhold both together. Your paycheck also has federal income tax, withheld with the 2026 IRS tables and your Form W-4, plus Social Security and Medicare.

How Maryland withholding is figured

  • Your employer subtracts the $3,400 standard deduction and $3,200 for each exemption on Form MW507 from your yearly wages, then withholds the state rate (4.75% to 6.5%; lower state brackets are ignored for withholding) plus your county's rate.
  • County withholding uses the Comptroller's table for your county, which matches or slightly rounds up the county rate. Anne Arundel and Frederick rates depend on income; nonresidents pay a special 2.25% instead of a county tax.
  • Nothing is withheld if you earn less than $5,000 a year. The exemption value drops above $100,000 of income ($150,000 married filing jointly).
  • Maryland's paid family leave contributions start in 2027, so there is no deduction for it in 2026.
