Taxes on a Massachusetts paycheck
Massachusetts taxes wages at 5%, plus a 4% surtax on income over $1,107,750 in 2026. Employees also pay up to 0.46% of wages for Paid Family and Medical Leave. Your paycheck also has federal income tax, withheld with the 2026 IRS tables and your Form W-4, plus Social Security and Medicare.
How Massachusetts withholding is figured
- From each paycheck your employer subtracts the Social Security and Medicare tax withheld (up to $2,000 a year) and your exemption amount, annualizes the rest and taxes it at 5%, plus 4% more on any amount over $1,107,750 (Circular M).
- Exemptions on Form M-4: one exemption is worth $4,400 a year, each additional one $1,000; a spouse counts as four. Heads of household get $120 a year less withheld.
- Paid Family and Medical Leave: employers with 25 or more workers may deduct up to 0.46% of wages (0.18% family plus 0.28% medical), up to the Social Security wage base.
