Taxes on a New Jersey paycheck

New Jersey taxes wages at graduated rates from 1.4% to 10.75%. Employees also pay unemployment, disability and family leave insurance. Your paycheck also has federal income tax, withheld with the 2026 IRS tables and your Form W-4, plus Social Security and Medicare.

How New Jersey withholding is figured

  • Your employer subtracts $1,000 a year for each allowance on Form NJ-W4 and applies a withholding rate table: Rate A if you file single or married filing separately, Rate B if married filing jointly, head of household or surviving spouse, or the letter you picked from the NJ-W4 wage chart (Rates C, D and E are for two-income households).
  • Withholding rates run from 1.5% to 11.8%, a bit different from the tax rates, so the amount withheld is an estimate of your tax.
  • New Jersey excludes 401(k) contributions from taxable wages, but not contributions to 403(b), 457 or other retirement plans.
  • Employee insurance contributions for 2026: unemployment and workforce funds 0.425% on the first $44,800, disability 0.19% and family leave 0.23% on the first $171,100.
