Taxes on a New York paycheck

New York taxes wages at graduated rates from 3.9% to 10.9%. New York City and Yonkers add a local income tax, and employees pay small amounts for Paid Family Leave and disability insurance. Your paycheck also has federal income tax, withheld with the 2026 IRS tables and your Form W-4, plus Social Security and Medicare.

How New York withholding is figured

  • Your employer subtracts a deduction allowance ($7,400 a year single, $7,950 married) and $1,000 for each allowance on Form IT-2104, then applies the 2026 exact calculation tables (NYS-50-T-NYS, Method II).
  • Above $1,077,550 of yearly wages after allowances ($2,155,350 married), a flat 10.45% applies to all of it, rising to 11.1% above $5 million and 11.7% above $25 million (Method III).
  • New York City residents also have city tax withheld (2.05% to 4.25% withholding rates). Yonkers residents pay a surcharge of 16.75% of their state tax; nonresidents working in Yonkers pay 0.5% of wages after a small exclusion.
  • Paid Family Leave is 0.432% of wages up to $411.91 for 2026. Disability insurance is 0.5% of wages but no more than $0.60 a week; employers may collect it from employees but do not have to.
