Federal Holidays 2027: All 11 Dates, and What Is Open or Closed

Figures checked November 6, 2026 against primary sources

There are 11 federal holidays in 2027. Three of them land on a weekend, so federal workers get the day off on a nearby Friday or Monday instead: Juneteenth on Friday, June 18, Independence Day on Monday, July 5, and Christmas on Friday, December 24. New Year's Day 2028 falls on a Saturday, so Friday, December 31, 2027 is also a day off for most federal employees.

A federal holiday is not the same as a bank holiday. On the three Friday dates, the Federal Reserve Banks stay open, so many banks may be open too.

2027 Federal Holiday List

These are the days off for federal employees with a Monday to Friday workweek, as published by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM). The holiday names are the ones in the law. Some states, cities and businesses use other names, such as Presidents' Day for Washington's Birthday or Indigenous Peoples' Day for Columbus Day.

DateDayHoliday
January 1FridayNew Year's Day
January 18MondayBirthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.
February 15MondayWashington's Birthday
May 31MondayMemorial Day
June 18FridayJuneteenth National Independence Day (observed; June 19 is a Saturday)

September 6MondayLabor Day
October 11MondayColumbus Day
November 11ThursdayVeterans Day
November 25ThursdayThanksgiving Day
December 24FridayChristmas Day (observed; December 25 is a Saturday)

One more date matters for year-end planning: Friday, December 31, 2027 is the observed New Year's Day for 2028. OPM lists it in its 2028 schedule, so it does not appear in the 2027 count, but federal offices close that day.

Why Some Dates Move

The list of legal public holidays is set by federal law, 5 U.S.C. 6103. Five holidays have fixed dates (January 1, June 19, July 4, November 11 and December 25). The other six fall on a set Monday or Thursday, so they never land on a weekend.

When a fixed-date holiday falls on a weekend, two rules apply to most federal employees:

  • Saturday holiday: the Friday before is the day off. The law says so directly.
  • Sunday holiday: the Monday after is the day off, under Executive Order 11582.

In 2027 the Saturday rule moves Juneteenth and Christmas to Fridays, and moves New Year's Day 2028 back to December 31. The Sunday rule moves Independence Day to Monday, July 5. These rules are about federal pay and leave. Banks, the Postal Service and stock exchanges set their own schedules, which is why the next section matters.

What Is Open and Closed

Banks

The Federal Reserve closes on the Monday after a Sunday holiday, but on the Friday before a Saturday holiday the Federal Reserve Banks stay open and only the Board of Governors in Washington closes. For 2027 the Fed lists:

  • Open (Reserve Banks): Friday, June 18, Friday, December 24 and Friday, December 31.
  • Closed (Reserve Banks and Board): Monday, July 5.

On the other eight weekday holidays the Fed is closed. Because payments between banks run through the Reserve Banks, most banks follow the Fed's calendar, but each bank sets its own branch hours. Check your bank's holiday page before counting on a transfer, a deposit or an ACH payment on June 18, December 24 or December 31.

Post offices

The U.S. Postal Service closes Post Offices on federal holidays and resumes regular delivery the next business day. Its handling of Saturday holidays differs from the federal one: in 2026, when July 4 fell on a Saturday, USPS observed the holiday on the Saturday itself and kept Post Offices open with normal delivery on Friday, July 3. For 2027, USPS lists Saturday, June 19 (Juneteenth), Monday, July 5 (Independence Day) and Saturday, December 25 (Christmas). It says Post Offices will be open on Friday, June 18 and Friday, December 24, and deliveries will occur as normal (USPS holidays and events page, read Nov. 7, 2026).

Stock market

The New York Stock Exchange's 2027 holiday list differs from the federal one in three ways:

  • The NYSE is closed on Good Friday, March 26, 2027, which is not a federal holiday.
  • The NYSE is open on Columbus Day and Veterans Day; neither is on its holiday list.
  • The NYSE is open on Friday, December 31, 2027. Its calendar says that because New Year's Day falls on Saturday, January 1, 2028, no New Year's Day holiday is observed.

The NYSE also closes early, at 1:00 p.m. Eastern time, on Friday, November 26, 2027, the day after Thanksgiving. It observes Juneteenth on June 18, Independence Day on July 5 and Christmas on December 24, matching the federal dates.

Social Security payments

If a Social Security or SSI payment date falls on a weekend or legal holiday, SSA pays on the last business day before it. No 2027 federal holiday falls on a Wednesday, so the Wednesday payment dates do not move. Holidays do shift two SSI dates: the January 2027 payment arrives on Thursday, December 31, 2026, and SSA's 2027 sheet shows the January 2028 payment on Thursday, December 30, 2027. See our 2027 Social Security payment schedule for every date.

IRS deadlines

Under 26 U.S.C. 7503, a federal tax deadline that falls on a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday moves to the next day that is none of those. For this rule a "legal holiday" means a legal holiday in the District of Columbia, which adds DC Emancipation Day, Friday, April 16, 2027. That day does not affect the 2027 filing deadline, because 2026 returns are due Thursday, April 15, 2027. Our 2027 money deadlines calendar lists each tax date with this rule already applied.

One year-end point: December 31, 2027 is a federal holiday, but it is still the last day of the tax year. Plan year-end moves that must happen in 2027 for earlier in the week, since banks and brokers may set their own cutoffs.

FAQ

How many federal holidays are there in 2027?
Eleven, from New Year's Day on Friday, January 1 to Christmas, observed on Friday, December 24. Friday, December 31, 2027 is also a day off, but it counts as the 2028 New Year's holiday.

Are banks closed on Juneteenth 2027?
Not necessarily. Juneteenth is observed on Friday, June 18, because June 19 is a Saturday, and the Federal Reserve Banks are open that day. Your bank may be open or closed; check its holiday schedule.

Is the stock market open on federal holidays?
On most of them, no. In 2027 the NYSE is open on Columbus Day, Veterans Day and December 31, and closed on Good Friday, which is not a federal holiday.

Is December 31, 2027 a federal holiday?
Yes. New Year's Day 2028 falls on a Saturday, so federal employees get Friday, December 31 off. The Federal Reserve Banks and the NYSE are open that day.

Does a federal holiday move a tax deadline?
Yes, if the deadline lands on it. The deadline moves to the next day that is not a weekend or a legal holiday in the District of Columbia.
