Tax Refund Calculator 2026: Estimate Your Refund (or What You'll Owe) Before You File

Your federal refund is simple arithmetic: what you paid in during the year (withholding and estimated payments) plus refundable credits, minus your tax after credits. The hard part is knowing the tax. The calculator below works out a 2026 Form 1040 from your pay stub: the 2026 brackets and standard deduction, the new deductions for tips, overtime, car loan interest and people 65 and older, the $2,200 child tax credit and the 2026 earned income credit. Then it compares the result with what you will have withheld by December 31.

Have your latest pay stub ready: you need your wages for the year, the federal tax withheld so far, and the amount withheld per paycheck. Open "More options" for other income, tips, overtime, a car loan, itemized deductions or estimated payments.

Where a Refund Comes From

A refund is not a bonus from the IRS; it is your own money coming back, or a refundable credit. For a single job with a Form W-4 that matches your situation, the IRS withholding tables are built to come out close to your actual tax. In our examples below, withholding under the 2026 Publication 15-T method matches the tax to within a dollar for a simple single-job return. Refunds usually come from:

  • Refundable credits: the earned income credit and the refundable part of the child tax credit can be paid out even when you owe no tax.
  • Deductions your paycheck did not know about: the new 2026 deductions for tips, overtime, car loan interest and seniors reduce withholding only if you listed them on a 2026 W-4.
  • Extra withholding: a W-4 set to withhold more, or a job that ended partway through the year.
  • Itemized deductions larger than the standard deduction.

The opposite, owing money, usually comes from income without withholding (interest, gains, side work), two jobs without the Step 2 box checked, or a large IRA withdrawal.

Example Refunds for 2026

HouseholdWithheld (Pub 15-T)Tax after creditsRefundable creditsRefund
Single, $40,000 wages$2,620$2,620$0$0
Married, two children, $90,000 wages$2,040$2,040$0$0
Head of household, two children, $30,000 wages$0$0$9,424 (EITC $6,024 + child credit $3,400)$9,424
Single server, $38,000 wages incl. $15,000 tips$2,380$690$0$1,690
Married, one child, $120,000 incl. $8,000 overtime premium$7,840$6,880$0$960

Hypothetical. Withholding computed with the 2026 Publication 15-T annual percentage method, biweekly pay, a 2026 W-4 with dependents in Step 3 and no Step 4 entries. Tax from Rev. Proc. 2025-32 and P.L. 119-21. Our arithmetic. Ages under 65.

The server and the overtime worker get refunds only because their paychecks did not account for the new deductions. Had they filed a 2026 W-4 listing their tips or overtime in the Step 4(b) worksheet, they would have kept that money in their paychecks during the year instead.

The four Schedule 1-A deductions are taken after adjusted gross income, so you can claim them with the standard deduction, and they do not change AGI-based limits for other credits. Tips and overtime need a joint return if you are married, a valid Social Security number, and they cut income tax only: Social Security and Medicare tax still apply. Details in our guides to no tax on tips and no tax on overtime.

The child tax credit is $2,200 for each child under 17 with a Social Security number. The part that exceeds your tax can be refunded up to $1,700 per child, limited to 15% of earned income above $2,500; families with three or more children can use their Social Security and Medicare tax instead if that gives more. Other dependents, such as children 17 and older or a parent you support, bring a $500 credit that is not refundable.

If You Are On Track to Owe

There is still time to fix it before December 31. Give your employer a new 2026 Form W-4 and enter an extra amount per paycheck in Step 4(c); the calculator shows roughly how much. Withholding counts as paid evenly through the year, so extra withholding in November and December can also help avoid an underpayment penalty. If you have income without withholding, an estimated payment by January 15, 2027 covers the last quarter.

When Your Refund Arrives

The IRS says to allow 3 weeks from the date you e-file and 6 or more weeks for a mailed return. By law, refunds on returns that claim the earned income credit or the additional child tax credit cannot be issued before February 15, so those arrive later in the season. In the 2026 filing season the average refund was $3,276; see our average tax refund page for the history and refunds by income.

Sources & Methodology

Method notes. The calculator and examples are our arithmetic for tax year 2026. The EITC follows the IRS table method (credit at the middle of each $50 band) and can differ from the official 2026 table by a few dollars; the 2026 table and the 2026 versions of Schedules 1-A and 8812 had not been published as of October 12, 2026. The estimate assumes every child qualifies for both credits. It does not include self-employment tax, the education, dependent care or saver's credits, the alternative minimum tax or state taxes.

FAQ

How much will my tax refund be in 2027?
It depends on what you have withheld compared with your 2026 tax after credits. Enter your pay stub figures in the calculator above for an estimate.

Will the new tax law make my refund bigger?
It can. If you qualify for the tips, overtime, car loan interest or senior deductions and did not adjust your W-4, your withholding did not reflect them, so the savings show up as a larger refund.

Why is my refund smaller than last year?
Common reasons: a raise or second job without more withholding, a child turning 17, losing the earned income credit as income rose, or income such as interest or gains with no withholding.

Is it better to get a refund or owe a little?
A large refund means you lent money to the IRS interest-free during the year. Owing a small amount is fine as long as you stay within the underpayment safe harbors.
