How Much Do Instacart Shoppers Make in 2026? Batch Pay, Tips and What You Keep
Instacart does not publish an hourly rate, an average, or a minimum per batch for shoppers, except where a local law sets one. It does explain how pay is built: batch pay based on the expected effort, extras such as boosts and heavy pay, promotions, and 100% of customer tips. New York City is the clearest exception: since January 26, 2026 grocery apps there, Instacart included, must pay a minimum hourly rate. In our hypothetical example, a shopper with $18.00 an hour of app pay keeps about $12.68 an hour after car costs and federal tax.

The Short Answer
- No published rate: Instacart's shopper earnings page gives no hourly figure and no minimum per batch. It says local laws in places like California and New York City "can affect shopper pay".
- Pay = batch pay + promotions + tips. Batch pay reflects expected effort: travel, number and weight of items, and shopping time.
- Tips: Instacart says shoppers always get 100% of tips. If a customer removes a tip after delivery without reporting a problem, Instacart covers it up to $10.
- Heavy pay: at least $2 when items of 8 lbs or more in the batch total 50 lbs or more.
- New York City: grocery delivery apps, including Instacart, must pay at least $22.13 an hour before tips (from April 1, 2026).
- What you keep: in our hypothetical example, $18.00 per hour of app pay becomes about $12.68 after car costs and federal tax.
How Instacart Pays Shoppers
Instacart says total earnings are batch pay, promotions and tips. A batch can hold one or more customer orders, even from more than one store, and pay is based on the whole batch. You can take Shop Only, Delivery Only or Full Service (shop and deliver) orders, and Instacart says you are never penalized for not accepting a batch.
Batch pay
In Instacart's words, batch pay "reflects the total expected effort" of a batch, including travel to the store and to the customer, the quantity and weight of items, and the expected shopping time. It can rise if the customer adds items before checkout. Two extras are folded into batch pay:
- Boosts: extra pay on some batches when there are not enough shoppers nearby, so shoppers may be farther away.
- Heavy pay: at least $2, when items weighing 8 lbs or more total 50 lbs or more. The batch shows a "heavy pay" tag.
Promotions and peak times
Instacart offers promotions when customer demand is high, sometimes to individual shoppers. Its "peak earning times" chart shows which hours pay more per batch over the coming week. Instacart says that chart is not available in California, New York City or Seattle.
Tips and tip protection
Instacart says shoppers get 100% of customer tips. Customers can tip a percentage of the basket or a fixed amount, so a percentage tip can change if items are replaced or refunded. If a customer zeroes out a tip after delivery without reporting an issue, Instacart covers the removed amount up to $10. If a customer cancels after you start, Instacart says you are paid for your time; it does not say how much.
When and how you get paid
| Option | Timing | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly direct deposit | Paid Wednesday to Friday for the prior Monday to Sunday | None stated |
| Instant cashout | Batch earnings within minutes of delivery; full earnings including tip 2 hours after delivery | $0.50 per cashout |

Instacart Earnings Calculator
Enter your weekly payout from the Shopper app (including tips), hours logged in and miles driven. It is pre-filled with the hypothetical example below. The full version is our gig earnings calculator.
From App Pay to What You Keep
This example is hypothetical. The inputs are round numbers we chose to show the math. They are not typical Instacart earnings, and Instacart publishes no average to check them against.
Inputs: $450 a week of app pay, of which $180 is tips; 25 hours logged in; 200 miles a week; 48 weeks a year; $10 a week of other costs (phone share, bags, parking); single filer with $40,000 of W-2 wages from a main job. Car cost uses AAA's 2026 figures for gas, maintenance and extra wear: about 38.7 cents a mile.
| Line | Per year |
|---|---|
| App pay including tips | $21,600.00 |
| Car cost (gas, maintenance, extra wear) | -$3,717.12 |
| Other costs | -$480.00 |
| Federal tax caused by the gig (self-employment + income tax) | -$2,188.54 |
| What you keep | $15,214.34 |
| Per hour logged in: app pay | $18.00 |
| Per hour: after car and other costs | $14.50 |
| Per hour: what you keep | $12.68 |
Our calculator engine (the same one as the calculator above), 2026 federal rules. State and local income tax not included.
How the tax line works. Self-employment tax is $1,977.01. Profit for tax purposes is $13,992.00, after the IRS mileage deduction of $7,128.00 (72.5 cents a mile to June 30, 76 cents from July 1). The example assumes all $8,640.00 of tips qualify for the 2026 tips deduction, which lowers income tax but not self-employment tax. The model suggests setting aside 10.1% of app pay, about $547.14 a quarter.
Shopping work has its own traps:
- Time in the store is part of your hours. Batch pay is set on the expected shopping time. A slow store, long checkout lines or many replacements cut your hourly pay.
- Waiting and unpaid miles. The per-hour figures divide by hours logged in. Time waiting for a good batch and miles driven to the store or home are not paid separately.
Costs You Pay as a Shopper
- Car, cash basis. AAA's 2026 study puts gas plus maintenance, repair and tires at 29.04 cents a mile; with extra wear, about 38.7 cents. The full cost of owning a new car at 15,000 miles a year is 85.75 cents a mile.
- Car, tax basis. The IRS business rate is 72.5 cents a mile from January 1 to June 30, 2026, and 76 cents from July 1, 2026.
- Parking and tolls. Store and city parking adds up. The IRS lets you deduct parking and tolls on top of the mileage rate.
- Cashout fees. $0.50 per instant cashout.
Taxes for Instacart Shoppers
If you are paid as an independent contractor, no tax is taken out of your pay. The IRS says all gig income is taxable, even without a tax form.
- Self-employment tax: 15.3% on 92.35% of net profit once net earnings reach $400. See self-employment tax 2026.
- Forms: Schedule C for income and expenses, Schedule SE for the tax. For payments after 2025 the 1099-NEC threshold is $2,000; a 1099-K is required above $20,000 and more than 200 transactions.
- Tips: for 2025 to 2028 up to $25,000 of qualified tips can be deducted. Grocery and app-based delivery workers are on the IRS list of qualifying jobs, but the tips must appear on a 1099 and the deduction lowers income tax only. See no tax on tips 2026.
- Quarterly payments: 2026 due dates are April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027. See estimated tax payments 2026 or the 1099 tax calculator.
Minimum Pay Laws for Instacart Shoppers
New York City. Local laws that took full effect on January 26, 2026 extended the city's delivery worker minimum pay rate to third-party grocery delivery apps. The Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) names Instacart. The rate was $21.44 an hour at that date and rose to $22.13 an hour, before tips, from the first pay period on or after April 1, 2026. DCWP's notice to grocery workers says the minimum covers time spent preparing an order and making deliveries, and that the app must pay all tips, pay at least weekly and offer a no-fee way to get paid. DCWP also says further rules that may raise pay apply from July 1, 2026; we could not confirm their details.
California and Seattle. Instacart says California has local laws that change how it operates and can affect pay, and points shoppers to the Help Center in the Shopper app. California's Prop 22 sets a floor for app-based delivery drivers of 120% of the applicable minimum wage for engaged time plus a per-mile amount, and Seattle's PayUp ordinance sets minimums for certain app-based workers ($0.47 a minute plus $0.80 a mile, or $5.34 per offer, in 2026). Instacart's earnings page does not say how either law applies to each type of shopper, so check the app for your area.
Everywhere else, Instacart's page shows no minimum. You see the batch pay before you accept, and the decision is yours.
Requirements to Start
We could not read a current list of sign-up requirements on Instacart's own site: its shopper sign-up page loads them inside the app flow, and instacart.com blocked our requests. Check the requirements in the Instacart Shopper app before you apply. In its annual report, Instacart says it had about 600,000 shoppers who completed at least one order in December 2025.

Method notes. The worked example comes from our gig calculator engine with the inputs shown. Federal tax is the extra tax the gig income adds on top of the $40,000 job, including self-employment tax, the 2026 tips deduction and the IRS mileage deduction. It excludes state and local tax.
