How Much Do Lyft Drivers Make in 2026? Lyft's Number vs What You Keep

Lyft is the only big rideshare company that has published a driver pay figure. In a February 2024 post, Lyft said the median US driver using their own car earned $30.68 per hour of engaged time in the second half of 2023, including tips and bonuses, and $23.46 after Lyft's estimate of expenses. That figure is Lyft's, it is from 2023, and it counts only time spent driving to a pickup or with a passenger. It leaves out waiting time, the fixed costs of the car and taxes. Below we show Lyft's number as Lyft states it, then our own hypothetical walk-through built on it: about $13.44 for each hour logged in, after car costs and federal tax.

The Short Answer

  • Lyft's figure: $30.68 gross per engaged hour for the median US driver in the second half of 2023, including tips and bonuses; $23.46 after Lyft's estimate of per-mile expenses. No newer figure has been published.
  • What it leaves out: time waiting for rides, fixed car costs such as insurance and car payments, and taxes.
  • Lyft's fee is capped: at 30% of passenger payments, checked at the end of each month, with an adjustment paid if Lyft took more.
  • Tips are yours: Lyft says drivers keep 100% of tips; in 2023 tips were 8% of earnings on average.
  • Our hypothetical example: 15 engaged hours a week at Lyft's $30.68, inside 20 hours logged in, works out to $23.01 per logged-in hour gross and $13.44 after car costs and federal tax.

How Lyft Pays Drivers

From Lyft's driver earnings page, checked on October 18, 2026:

  • The fare. Lyft says the fare is based on the ride (such as time and distance and the distance to the pickup) and on local demand and supply.
  • Upfront pay. "In most cities, you'll see the earnings for each ride upfront." Upfront pay is not available in Washington State, New York City or Portland; there drivers are paid for each minute and mile at local rates.
  • The 30% fee cap. "Lyft's fee is capped at 30% of passenger payments before external fees are subtracted. If the total Lyft fee from all rides is more than 30% at the end of the month, you'll get paid an earnings adjustment." External fees are insurance, taxes and government fees. When Lyft announced the cap in February 2024 it described a weekly check; the current page says monthly.
  • Bonuses and Turbo. Lyft offers bonuses and, in select regions, Turbo, which Lyft says pays 10% to 40% more per ride.
  • Tips. Drivers keep 100% of tips. "In 2023, tips made up 8% of earnings on average for all drivers."
  • Getting paid. Lyft Direct gives free instant payouts to the Lyft Direct debit card after every ride. Express Pay costs $1.75 per transfer in nearly all states. Weekly Pay is transferred every Tuesday morning and arrives within two business days.

Lyft's Own Earnings Figure

These numbers are all Lyft's, from its post "Driver net earnings" dated February 6, 2024. They cover the second half of 2023 and drivers using their own vehicle (rentals excluded).

Lyft's 2023 figurePer engaged hour
Median gross earnings, incl. tips and bonuses$30.68
Median marginal expenses (Lyft's estimate, about 31 cents a mile)$7.02
Median earnings after those expenses$23.46
20th percentile driver, after expenses$17.46
80th percentile driver, after expenses$33.09

Source: Lyft. Lyft computed each driver's net and then took the median, so $30.68 minus $7.02 does not equal $23.46 exactly; Lyft notes this in its method.

What to know before you use it:

  • Engaged time only. Lyft defines engaged time as when the driver was "on the way to pick up a passenger, or had a passenger in the car." Time spent logged in and waiting is not in the hourly figure.
  • Marginal costs only. Lyft counted fuel, maintenance and repairs, and depreciation from extra miles (from AAA's 2023 data), plus cleaning at 2 cents a mile. It left out fixed costs such as car payments, registration and personal insurance.
  • Before tax. Neither figure takes out self-employment or income tax.
  • It varies by city. Lyft reported median net figures of $19.07 in Memphis, $18.72 in Charlotte, $25.31 in Philadelphia and $26.90 in Chicago.
  • Most drive part time. Lyft said 94% of drivers drive fewer than 20 hours a week, and the median driver logged 75 engaged hours and 1,647 engaged miles in all of 2023.

From App Pay to What You Keep

This walk-through is ours, not Lyft's. It is hypothetical. It starts from Lyft's $30.68 per engaged hour and adds what Lyft's figure leaves out.

  • Pay: 15 engaged hours a week at $30.68 is $460.20, of which $36.82 is tips (Lyft's 8% average).
  • Hours: we assume 20 hours logged in, so 5 hours of waiting. Lyft publishes no figure for this; your share of waiting time may be higher or lower.
  • Miles: Lyft's 2023 median of 1,647 engaged miles in 75 engaged hours is about 22 miles per engaged hour (our arithmetic), or 330 miles. We add 50 miles of driving between rides, for 380.
  • Other: $10 a week of other costs, 48 weeks a year, single filer with a $50,000 W-2 job.
Hypothetical driver, 2026Per yearPer hour logged in
App pay, incl. tips$22,089.60$23.01
Car cost (38.72¢ a mile x 18,240 miles)-$7,062.53$15.15 after car and other costs
Other costs-$480.00
Extra federal tax (self-employment $1,139.75 + income tax)-$1,647.33
What you keep$12,899.74$13.44

Our calculator's arithmetic (site engine), 2026 federal rules, 960 hours a year. Car cost = AAA 2026 fuel and maintenance (29.04¢) plus about 9.68¢ of extra depreciation per mile. State income tax not included.

Why it is lower than Lyft's $23.46: we divide by every hour logged in, not only engaged hours; our per-mile cost uses AAA's 2026 figures, which are higher than the 2023 data Lyft used; and we take out federal tax. Pay in 2026 may also differ from 2023.

The tax is fairly small because the IRS mileage deduction (72.5 cents a mile to June 30, 2026 and 76 cents from July 1, split evenly in the calculator) comes to $13,543.20, more than the car's cash cost. That leaves $8,066.40 of taxable profit. The tips, $1,767.36 for the year, also come off income for income tax. In this example, setting aside 7.5% of app pay covers the federal tax.

Costs You Pay

  • Fuel and maintenance. AAA's 2026 figure is 29.04 cents a mile: 17.32 cents of fuel (at $4.152 a gallon) and 11.73 cents of maintenance, repairs and tires.
  • Extra depreciation. About 9.68 cents per extra mile from AAA's 2026 figures, which brings the total to the 38.72 cents used above. Lyft also counted mileage depreciation in its own estimate.
  • Owning the car. If you bought or lease a car to drive, AAA's full cost is 85.75 cents a mile at 15,000 miles a year. Lyft's estimate leaves these fixed costs out.
  • Insurance and documents. Lyft asks drivers using their own car to upload insurance and registration. Ask your insurer whether your policy covers rideshare driving.
  • Express Pay. $1.75 per transfer in nearly all states, unless you use Lyft Direct or wait for Weekly Pay.

Taxes for Lyft Drivers

  • Tax forms. Payment platforms must send a 1099-K when payments are more than $20,000 and more than 200 transactions, and a 1099-NEC for $2,000 or more of other payments made after 2025. Some states have lower thresholds. All income is taxable even without a form.
  • Self-employment tax. 15.3% on 92.35% of net profit once net earnings reach $400. Half of it is deductible. See self-employment tax.
  • Mileage. 72.5 cents a business mile from January 1 to June 30, 2026, and 76 cents from July 1, 2026. Log every working mile.
  • Tips. Up to $25,000 of qualified tips can be deducted for 2025 to 2028. Rideshare drivers are a qualifying occupation. It lowers income tax only, and the tips must appear on a 1099 form. See no tax on tips.
  • Quarterly payments. If you expect to owe $1,000 or more, pay estimated tax. The 2026 dates are April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027. See the 1099 tax calculator and estimated tax payments.

Minimum Pay Laws for Rideshare Drivers

These apply to Lyft as well as Uber. Most pay for time and miles with a passenger (or engaged time), not time spent waiting.

Where2026 minimum
New York City (TLC)From March 1, 2026: $1.283 per mile + $0.681 per minute for Lyft and Uber trips. Wheelchair-accessible vehicles $1.601 per mile. Out-of-town trips $1.757 per mile + $0.725 per minute.
Washington State (L&I)Trips starting in Seattle: $0.70 per minute + $1.63 per mile with a passenger, or $6.12 per trip if higher. Rest of the state: $0.40 + $1.38, or $3.55. For 2027: Seattle $0.72 + $1.69 or $6.34; rest of state $0.41 + $1.43 or $3.68.
Minnesota (Minn. Stat. 181C.03)$1.28 per mile + $0.31 per minute with a rider, at least $5.00 per ride. From January 1, 2027: $1.33, $0.32 and $5.20.
Massachusetts (Attorney General settlement with Uber and Lyft)$34.48 per engaged hour from January 15, 2026.
California (Prop 22)120% of the applicable minimum wage for engaged time, plus a per-mile amount. With the $16.90 state minimum wage that is $20.28 an hour (our arithmetic), more where a local minimum is higher. Per mile: $0.36 in 2025 per the State Treasurer; DoorDash's California page lists $0.37 for 2026. Tips do not count toward it.

We have not verified pay rules in other states. Check with your state labor department.

Requirements to Drive

From Lyft's application requirements page. Lyft says requirements vary by region.

  • Age. The page says "You'll need to be 25 or older to drive with Lyft," while its own page summary says you may qualify at 21. Check the rule for your city.
  • A driver's license.
  • A 4-door vehicle, or a car rented through Lyft's Express Drive.
  • Insurance and registration if you use your own car. Some regions also require a vehicle inspection.
  • Consent to a criminal background check and a review of your driving history. Lyft says "this is not a credit check."

Sources & Methodology

All sources were checked on October 18, 2026. We have not driven for Lyft and have no earnings data of our own. Lyft's figures are reported as Lyft states them; the worked example is hypothetical arithmetic.

Method notes. The worked example runs our gig earnings calculator engine: 2026 federal tax for a single filer with $50,000 of W-2 wages, standard deduction, self-employment tax and the deduction for half of it, the QBI deduction and the tips deduction. The tax shown is the extra federal tax the driving adds. State and local taxes are not included.
