How Much Does DoorDash Pay in 2026? What Dashers Keep After Gas and Taxes

DoorDash does not publish an average hourly pay for Dashers. What it does publish is how pay is built: base pay of $2-$10+ per offer in Earn per Offer mode, a guaranteed active hourly rate in Earn by Time mode (the dollar amount is shown only in the app), promotions, and 100% of customer tips. Pay you see in the app is also not what you keep. In our hypothetical example, a Dasher with $20.00 an hour of app pay keeps about $13.45 an hour after car costs and federal tax.

The Short Answer

  • Base pay: DoorDash says base pay in Earn per Offer mode "ranges from $2-10+" depending on the estimated time, distance and desirability of the offer.
  • Earn by Time: a "minimum guaranteed active hourly rate" for time on a delivery. DoorDash does not publish the dollar rate. It varies by time and place and shows in the app.
  • Tips: DoorDash says 100% of tips it receives go to the Dasher, and base pay does not change with the tip.
  • No hourly average: DoorDash's pay page gives none. Its 2025 annual report (Form 10-K) says over 9 million people dashed in 2025 and earned over $20 billion in total. That is a global yearly total, not an hourly figure.
  • Pay floors by law: New York City ($22.13 an hour before tips), Seattle (PayUp) and California (Prop 22) set minimums. These are the floors we verified.
  • What you keep: in our hypothetical example, $20.00 per hour of app pay becomes about $13.45 after car costs and federal tax.

How DoorDash Pays Dashers

DoorDash says Dasher pay has three parts: base pay, promotions and customer tips. You pick one of two earning modes before you start a dash.

Earn per Offer

You are paid per completed offer. Base pay is DoorDash's own contribution and, in this mode, runs $2-$10+ per offer based on estimated time, distance and desirability. DoorDash says you will always see the guaranteed minimum pay for an offer before you accept it. Any time spent waiting between offers is not paid in this mode.

Earn by Time

You earn a minimum guaranteed hourly rate for active time, which DoorDash defines as the time from accepting an offer until you complete it. Tips and promotions come on top. DoorDash's page tells Dashers to check the app for the current rate in their zone; it publishes no number. The key word is "active": time spent logged in but waiting for an offer is not active time.

Promotions

DoorDash lists Peak Pay, Challenges, Boosts and Distance Pay as examples. They vary between Dashers by location and time of day. Peak Pay adds an amount per eligible delivery in Earn per Offer mode, or an amount to the hourly rate in Earn by Time mode.

Tips

Customers can tip at checkout or after delivery. DoorDash says 100% of tips it receives go to the Dasher, and that base pay and promotions never vary with the tip.

DoorDash Earnings Calculator

Enter your own weekly payout from the Dasher app (including tips), hours logged in and miles driven. It is pre-filled with the hypothetical example below. The full version is our gig earnings calculator.

From App Pay to What You Keep

This example is hypothetical. The inputs are round numbers we picked to show the math. They are not typical DoorDash earnings, and DoorDash publishes no average to compare them with.

Inputs: $500 a week of app pay, of which $200 is tips; 25 hours logged in; 300 miles a week; 48 weeks a year; $10 a week of other costs (phone share, bags); single filer with $40,000 of W-2 wages from a main job. Car cost uses AAA's 2026 figures for gas, maintenance and the extra wear from driving more: about 38.7 cents a mile.

LinePer year
App pay including tips$24,000.00
Car cost (gas, maintenance, extra wear)-$5,575.68
Other costs-$480.00
Federal tax caused by the gig (self-employment + income tax)-$1,805.02
What you keep$16,139.30
Per hour logged in: app pay$20.00
Per hour: after car and other costs$14.95
Per hour: what you keep$13.45

Our calculator engine (the same one as the calculator above), 2026 federal rules. State and local income tax not included.

How the tax line works. Self-employment tax is $1,812.54. The profit for tax purposes is $12,828.00, because the IRS mileage deduction ($10,692.00, using 72.5 cents a mile to June 30 and 76 cents from July 1) is larger than the cash car cost. The example also assumes all $9,600.00 of tips qualify for the 2026 tips deduction. That deduction, with the other deductions, cancels almost all of the income tax on the profit, so the total federal tax ends up close to the self-employment tax alone. If your tips do not qualify, you owe more. The model suggests setting aside 7.5% of app pay, about $451.26 a quarter.

Two things move the real result more than anything else:

  • Waiting time. The per-hour figures above divide by hours logged in, not active hours. In Earn by Time mode only active time is guaranteed. The more time you spend waiting for offers, the lower your real hourly pay.
  • Unpaid miles. Driving to a restaurant, back toward busy areas, or home after a dash costs the same per mile as a delivery. Count every mile, not only the ones in the offer.

Costs You Pay as a Dasher

  • Car, cash basis. AAA's 2026 Your Driving Costs study puts gas plus maintenance, repair and tires at 29.04 cents a mile. With the extra loss in value from driving more, about 38.7 cents. The full cost of owning a new car, at 15,000 miles a year, is 85.75 cents a mile.
  • Car, tax basis. The IRS business rate is 72.5 cents a mile for January 1 to June 30, 2026, and 76 cents from July 1, 2026. That is a deduction, not money DoorDash pays you.
  • Fees. $1.99 per Fast Pay transfer if you use it.
  • Parking and tolls. Deductible on top of the mileage rate, per the IRS.

Taxes for DoorDash Drivers

Dashers are independent contractors, so no tax is withheld from pay. The IRS says all gig income is taxable, even without a tax form.

  • Self-employment tax: 15.3% on 92.35% of net profit, owed once net earnings reach $400. See self-employment tax 2026.
  • Forms: income and expenses go on Schedule C; the tax on Schedule SE. For payments after 2025 the 1099-NEC threshold is $2,000. A 1099-K is required above $20,000 and more than 200 transactions.
  • Mileage log: keep a record of business miles. DoorDash suggests keeping records through the year.
  • Tips: for 2025 to 2028 you may deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tips. App-based delivery is a qualifying job, but the tips must appear on a 1099, and the deduction lowers income tax only, not self-employment tax. Details: no tax on tips 2026.
  • Quarterly payments: 2026 due dates are April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027. See estimated tax payments 2026 or run your numbers in the 1099 tax calculator.

Minimum Pay Laws for Dashers

Place2026 floorNotes
New York City$22.13 an hour, before tipsFrom the first pay period on or after April 1, 2026 (was $21.44). Set by the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection for restaurant and grocery delivery apps.
Seattle (PayUp)$0.47 a minute + $0.80 a mile, or $5.34 per offer if higherFor offers that start in Seattle. The city says the law covers "certain app-based workers".
California (Prop 22)120% of the local minimum wage for active time + $0.37 a mileWith the $16.90 state minimum wage, $20.28 per active hour where no higher local minimum applies. Tips do not count.

Sources: NYC DCWP; Seattle Office of Labor Standards; Prop 22 statute and California DIR. The $0.37 per-mile figure is from DoorDash's California page ("Reflects 2026 rate"); we could not read the State Treasurer's page that publishes it.

In California, DoorDash says it checks each week: if your delivery pay is below the guaranteed amount, it adds a pay adjustment for the difference. Its own example uses (120% x $16.90) x 10 active hours + $0.37 x 100 miles = $239.80. Outside places with a pay law, DoorDash's own guarantees are the offer minimum shown before you accept and, in Earn by Time mode, the hourly rate for active time.

Requirements to Start

DoorDash says you need to be 18 or older (the minimum age varies by state and may be higher), have a valid driver's license, pass a background check and have access to a vehicle.

FAQ

How much does DoorDash pay per delivery?
DoorDash says base pay in Earn per Offer mode is $2-$10+ per offer, plus any promotions and 100% of the tip. You see the guaranteed minimum for the offer before you accept.

How much does DoorDash pay per hour?
DoorDash does not publish an hourly average. In Earn by Time mode it guarantees a minimum rate for active time, shown in the app. Third-party apps such as Gridwise publish estimates from their users, but those are not DoorDash figures.

Do Dashers keep all their tips?
DoorDash says yes: 100% of tips it receives go to the Dasher, and base pay does not change with the tip amount.

How fast does DoorDash pay?
Weekly by direct deposit (usually 2-3 days to arrive), once a day with Fast Pay for $1.99, or instantly after each dash with a DoorDash Crimson account at no fee, per DoorDash.

Do I have to pay taxes on DoorDash income?
Yes. You owe self-employment tax once net earnings reach $400, plus income tax, even if you get no 1099. Mileage and other business costs lower the profit you are taxed on.

Sources & Methodology

All sources were checked on 2026-10-18. We did not dash for DoorDash and have no earnings data of our own; every DoorDash figure is attributed to DoorDash.

Method notes. The worked example comes from our gig calculator engine with the inputs shown. Federal tax is the extra tax the gig income adds on top of the $40,000 job, including self-employment tax, the 2026 tips deduction, and the IRS mileage deduction. It excludes state and local tax.
