How Much Do Shipt Shoppers Make in 2026? The $16 Standard, Tips and What You Keep
Unlike DoorDash, Grubhub and Instacart, Shipt publishes a dollar pay floor of its own. Its Shipt Earnings Standard says every offer pays at least $16 an hour, and more than $27 in select markets. The catch is in the fine print: the hour is Shipt's estimate of the time an order takes, not the time you actually spend, and waiting between orders is not counted. Shipt publishes no average earnings. In our hypothetical example, a shopper whose offers pay exactly the $16 standard, plus tips, ends up with $17.60 an hour of app pay and keeps about $12.26 an hour after car costs and federal tax.

The Short Answer
- Floor: Shipt says every shopper "will earn at least $16 per hour for each offer, based on Shipt's time and effort estimates," and "more than $27 in select markets."
- Estimated, not actual time: if an order takes longer than Shipt estimated, Shipt says it does not add pay. Time between orders is not covered.
- Pay = offer pay + bonuses + tips. Shipt says shoppers get 100% of customer tips.
- Getting paid: weekly direct deposit on Fridays, or Instant Payout up to 3 times a day for $0.49 each, with a $500 daily limit.
- New York City: Shipt pays at least $22.13 per hour of active trip time, before tips, under the city's grocery delivery law. California's Prop 22 also applies.
- What you keep: in our hypothetical example, $17.60 per hour of app pay becomes about $12.26 after car costs and federal tax.
How Shipt Pays Shoppers
Shipt says shopper pay has three parts: offer pay, bonuses and tips. Each offer card shows the estimated pay, the estimated time, the store, the customer's address and the number of items. Accepting is your choice.
Offer pay and the Earnings Standard
Offer pay is what Shipt calls "effort-based." Shipt lists factors such as store size, estimated drive time, time of day, holiday season, apartment versus house delivery, and how likely and complex substitutions are. Promo pay, on-time delivery pay and "extra pay" can be added to some orders, for example when an unclaimed order is at risk of running late or demand is high.
Shipt gives a formula to turn an offer into an hourly rate:
Offer amount x 60 / estimated time in minutes = pay per hour
The Shipt Earnings Standard says that number is never below $16 for any offer, in any market. Shipt's own example: an order estimated at 60 minutes "will never pay less than $16." Pay can go up if the customer adds items. It does not go down after you accept a single order unless the customer cancels.
Why "estimated" matters
Shipt is direct about this: "If a shopper takes longer to complete a shop we do not add additional pay. Likewise, if a shopper takes less time we do not subtract pay." So the $16 is a floor on Shipt's time estimate, not on your clock. A crowded store, slow checkout or a hard-to-find address lowers your real hourly rate. Time spent waiting for offers is not part of any estimate. If an order is canceled before you start shopping, Shipt says you are not paid for it; after you start, you get a percentage of the offer.
Bonuses and tips
Bonuses are extra pay for orders that meet set conditions, such as on-time delivery or a date range. Shipt says shoppers receive 100% of customer tips. Customers can tip in the app with no time limit after delivery, and tips are paid in the pay period in which they are captured, so a Sunday tip may land a week later.
When and how you get paid
| Option | Timing | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly direct deposit | Fridays, for orders and tips from the previous Monday to Sunday | None stated |
| Instant Payout | Up to 3 times a day, usually within an hour; $500 daily limit | $0.49 per payout, collected for Stripe Connect |
Source: Shipt, "Shopper Pay" FAQ and "Instant Payout" article, read 2026-10-20. Instant Payout needs a debit card on file and at least one completed weekly payout. Shipt says tips of $50 or more and some manually applied bonuses are not eligible and arrive with the weekly payout.
Shipt Earnings Calculator
Enter your weekly payout from the Shipt Shopper app (including tips), hours logged in and miles driven. It is pre-filled with the hypothetical example below. The full version is our gig earnings calculator.
From App Pay to What You Keep
This example is hypothetical. We built the offer pay on Shipt's published $16 standard; the other inputs are round numbers. It is not typical Shipt pay, and Shipt publishes no average to compare it with.
Inputs: offers that Shipt estimates at 20 hours a week, paid at exactly $16 an hour of estimated time ($320), plus $120 of tips, for $440 a week of app pay. You are logged in 25 hours a week, because orders run past the estimate and you wait between them. 180 miles a week; 48 weeks a year; $10 a week of other costs (phone share, bags, parking); single filer with $40,000 of W-2 wages from a main job. Car cost uses AAA's 2026 figures for gas, maintenance and extra wear: about 38.7 cents a mile.
| Line | Per year |
|---|---|
| App pay including tips | $21,120.00 |
| Car cost (gas, maintenance, extra wear) | -$3,345.41 |
| Other costs | -$480.00 |
| Federal tax caused by the gig (self-employment + income tax) | -$2,587.81 |
| What you keep | $14,706.79 |
| Per hour logged in: app pay | $17.60 |
| Per hour: after car and other costs | $14.41 |
| Per hour: what you keep | $12.26 |
Our calculator engine (the same one as the calculator above), 2026 federal rules. State and local income tax not included. Lines may not add to the cent because of rounding.
Look at the first per-hour line. The offers met the $16 standard, but $320 of offer pay over 25 real hours is $12.80 an hour before tips. Tips lift it to $17.60. That gap between estimated and logged time is the main thing to track in your own numbers.
How the tax line works. Self-employment tax is $2,009.90. Profit for tax purposes is $14,224.80, after the IRS mileage deduction of $6,415.20 (72.5 cents a mile to June 30, 76 cents from July 1). The example assumes all $5,760.00 of tips qualify for the 2026 tips deduction, which lowers income tax but not self-employment tax. The model suggests setting aside 12.3% of app pay, about $646.95 a quarter.
Costs You Pay as a Shopper
- Car, cash basis. AAA's 2026 study puts gas plus maintenance, repair and tires at 29.04 cents a mile; with extra wear, about 38.7 cents. The full cost of owning a new car at 15,000 miles a year is 85.75 cents a mile.
- Car, tax basis. The IRS business rate is 72.5 cents a mile from January 1 to June 30, 2026, and 76 cents from July 1, 2026.
- Insurance. Shipt lists auto insurance as a requirement to shop.
- Parking and tolls. Deductible on top of the mileage rate, per the IRS.
- Payout fees. $0.49 per Instant Payout if you use it.
Taxes for Shipt Shoppers
Shipt says shoppers are independent contractors and that taxes are not taken out of pay. The IRS says all gig income is taxable, even without a tax form.
- Self-employment tax: 15.3% on 92.35% of net profit once net earnings reach $400. See self-employment tax 2026.
- Your 1099: Shipt files 1099-NEC forms through Stripe. Its tax page says shoppers who earned $600 or more in 2025 got one. For payments made after 2025 the IRS threshold is $2,000. Shipt also offers an End of Year Statement in the app that shows total earnings and total tips separately, whether or not you get a 1099.
- How much to set aside: Shipt suggests 25-30% of each paycheck. Our example needs less because of the mileage and tips deductions; run your own numbers in the 1099 tax calculator.
- Tips: for 2025 to 2028 up to $25,000 of qualified tips can be deducted. App-based delivery is on the IRS list of qualifying jobs, but the tips must appear on a 1099 and the deduction lowers income tax only. See no tax on tips 2026.
- Quarterly payments: 2026 due dates are April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027. See estimated tax payments 2026.
Minimum Pay Laws for Shipt Shoppers
Shipt says pay "may operate differently" in California and New York City because of local law.
New York City. Since January 26, 2026, the city's delivery worker minimum pay rate covers third-party grocery delivery apps. The Department of Consumer and Worker Protection's notice for grocery workers names Instacart and Shipt as examples. The rate is $22.13 an hour, before tips, from the first pay period on or after April 1, 2026 (it was $21.44). Shipt says it uses the law's "Standard Method": $22.13 per hour of active trip time, counted from when you swipe to head to the store until you complete the order. If your weekly pay falls short, Shipt adds an "NYC minimum pay adjustment" on Friday. DCWP also says the app must pay all tips, pay at least weekly with a no-fee option, and follow further rules that may raise pay from July 1, 2026; we could not confirm what those rules require.
California. Shipt says Prop 22 guarantees at least 120% of the local minimum wage for engaged time, which includes driving and shopping, plus $0.37 a mile. With the $16.90 state minimum wage, that is $20.28 per engaged hour where no higher local minimum applies. Tips do not count toward it. The $0.37 rate is Shipt's figure (DoorDash and Grubhub state the same); we could not read the State Treasurer's page that publishes it.
Everywhere else, the Shipt Earnings Standard is the only floor, and it applies to estimated time.
Requirements to Start
Shipt's help center lists: at least 18 years old; a valid mailing address; a valid U.S. driver's license, Social Security number and auto insurance; a reliable vehicle; the ability to lift 50 pounds; and an iPhone (iOS 13 or newer) or Android phone (7.0 or newer).
FAQ
How much do Shipt shoppers make an hour?
Shipt guarantees at least $16 per hour of its own estimated time for each offer, more than $27 in select markets, plus 100% of tips. It publishes no average for actual hours worked. Third-party apps such as Gridwise publish estimates from their users, but those are not Shipt figures.
Is the $16 an hour guaranteed for the time I work?
No. It applies to Shipt's time estimate for each offer. Shipt says it does not add pay if an order takes longer, and waiting between offers is not counted. New York City and California have legal floors based on active or engaged time.
How do I work out what an offer pays per hour?
Shipt's formula is offer amount x 60 / estimated minutes. Tips and bonuses come on top.
How much does Shipt Instant Payout cost?
$0.49 per payout, up to 3 a day and $500 a day, per Shipt. Without it you are paid by direct deposit every Friday.
Do Shipt shoppers pay taxes?
Yes. Shipt takes no tax out of pay. You owe self-employment tax once net earnings reach $400, plus income tax, and may need quarterly payments.

Method notes. The worked example comes from our gig calculator engine with the inputs shown. Federal tax is the extra tax the gig income adds on top of the $40,000 job, including self-employment tax, the 2026 tips deduction and the IRS mileage deduction. It excludes state and local tax. The $12.80 figure is our arithmetic from the example inputs ($320 / 25 hours).
