How Much Do Uber Drivers Make in 2026? What You Keep After Gas and Taxes
Uber does not publish an average hourly pay for drivers. Its earnings page explains how fares are built and says the information "does not guarantee earnings." So any single "Uber drivers make $X an hour" figure comes from someone else, usually without gas, wear on the car or tax taken out. Below is how Uber says it pays, the minimum pay laws that apply in some states and cities, and a worked example. In that hypothetical example, $20 an hour of app pay leaves about $11.39 an hour after car costs and federal tax.

The Short Answer
- No official average. Uber's driver earnings page explains fares, surge, promotions and tips, but gives no hourly or weekly average.
- What you see in the app is pay after Uber's cut. Uber keeps the difference between what the rider pays and what you earn. It does not publish that share as a percentage.
- Tips are yours. Uber says you always receive 100% of your tips.
- Car costs come out of your pay. AAA puts 2026 fuel and maintenance at 29.04 cents a mile, before depreciation, insurance or payments.
- You pay your own taxes. Drivers are self-employed: 15.3% self-employment tax on 92.35% of profit, plus income tax.
- Some places set a floor. New York City, Washington State, Minnesota, Massachusetts and California have minimum pay rules for rideshare drivers.
- Our hypothetical example: $500 a week of app pay for 25 hours logged in is $20.00 an hour gross and about $11.39 an hour after car costs, other costs and federal tax.
How Uber Pays Drivers
From Uber's "How much drivers make" page, checked on October 18, 2026:
- Upfront fares. "In most cities, see how much you'll make and where you'll go before you accept a trip." Uber says upfront fares are based on base fares, estimated trip length and duration, pickup distance and surge pricing. Adjustments and tips are added after the trip.
- Time and distance. "In some cities, you'll earn a base fare plus the time and distance you travel." The national page gives no per-mile or per-minute rates; they differ by city.
- Surge. Busy areas show in purple on the rides heatmap. Trips started there while surge is on "will include extra earnings" in the fare. Uber adds that the heatmap "doesn't guarantee trips, earnings, or wait times."
- Quests. Extra pay "for completing a certain number of trips in a specified amount of time." You opt in under Opportunities in the Driver app.
- Boost+. Extra pay on top of base fares for trips that start in a set area during a set time window. Uber says these "are offered occasionally."
- Wait time. Per-minute fees start if the rider has not got in after 2 minutes on most trips (5 minutes for Uber Black and Uber SUV).
- Tips. "You'll always receive 100% of your tips."
- Uber's share. Uber says it keeps the difference between what a customer pays and what a driver earns, excluding tips, tolls and certain fees, taxes and surcharges. Its 2025 annual report (Form 10-K) says the service fee is either a fixed percentage of the fare or that difference, depending on the market.
- Getting paid. Earnings are deposited weekly, "usually on Thursdays." Instant Pay lets you cash out up to 6 times a day "for a small fee"; Uber says fees vary by market and does not list them.
The app's weekly Earnings Hub shows total earnings, trips and hours active. "Active" hours are not the same as the hours you spend logged in and waiting for a request, which matters for your real hourly pay (next sections). Third-party apps such as Gridwise publish estimates from their users' data; those figures are pay before car costs and tax, and we do not repeat them here.

From App Pay to What You Keep
Since Uber publishes no average, this example uses round numbers. They are hypothetical and are not typical Uber earnings. The driver earns $500 a week in the app, including $40 of tips, over 25 hours logged in, and drives 450 miles while working. Other costs (phone plan share, cleaning) are $10 a week. They drive 48 weeks a year, file single, and also have a $50,000 W-2 job.
| Hypothetical driver, 2026 | Per year | Per hour logged in |
|---|---|---|
| App pay, incl. tips | $24,000.00 | $20.00 |
| Car cost (38.72¢ a mile x 21,600 miles) | -$8,363.52 | $12.63 after car and other costs |
| Other costs | -$480.00 | |
| Extra federal tax (self-employment $1,057.17 + income tax) | -$1,494.30 | |
| What you keep | $13,662.18 | $11.39 |
Our calculator's arithmetic (site engine), 2026 federal rules, 1,200 hours a year. Car cost = AAA 2026 fuel and maintenance (29.04¢) plus about 9.68¢ of extra depreciation per mile. State income tax not included.
Why the tax is small: the IRS lets you deduct miles at the standard rate (72.5 cents to June 30, 2026 and 76 cents from July 1). The calculator splits the year's miles evenly between the two rates, which gives a $16,038.00 deduction. That is more than the $8,363.52 the car cost in cash, so taxable profit is only $7,482.00. The $40 a week of tips ($1,920.00 a year) also comes off taxable income under the tips deduction. Self-employment tax still applies to the full profit.
Waiting time and unpaid miles. Your hourly pay depends on the hours you are logged in, not only the hours with a rider. Time between trips and miles driven to get back to a busy area are unpaid, but they still cost fuel and wear. That is why the example divides by all 25 hours and counts all 450 miles.
Can you make $1,000 a week? At the same rates as the example, $1,000 of app pay takes 50 hours logged in and about 900 miles. Over 48 weeks you would keep $27,324.36, still $11.39 an hour, after car costs and federal tax. These numbers are hypothetical too.
Costs You Pay
- Fuel and maintenance. AAA's 2026 "Your Driving Costs" puts these at 29.04 cents a mile for an average new vehicle: 17.32 cents of fuel (at $4.152 a gallon) and 11.73 cents of maintenance, repairs and tires.
- Extra depreciation. Driving more miles lowers the car's value faster. From AAA's figures that is about 9.68 cents per extra mile, which is how we reach the 38.72 cents used above.
- Full cost of owning the car. If you bought the car for driving, AAA's full 2026 figure is 85.75 cents a mile at 15,000 miles a year, including insurance, finance charges, registration and depreciation. Pick that setting in the calculator to see the difference.
- Insurance. Uber's requirements page asks for proof of vehicle insurance if you drive your own car. Ask your insurer whether your personal policy covers rideshare driving.
Taxes for Uber Drivers
- Forms from Uber. Uber's tax page says it issues a 1099-K for on-trip gross earnings and a 1099-NEC for promotions, referrals and other payments, plus an annual tax summary that "is not an official tax document." Under IRS rules, a 1099-K is required when payments are more than $20,000 and more than 200 transactions, and a 1099-NEC at $2,000 for payments made after 2025. Some states have lower thresholds. All the income is taxable even without a form.
- Self-employment tax. 15.3% on 92.35% of net profit, owed once net earnings reach $400. Half of it is deductible. See self-employment tax.
- Mileage. 72.5 cents a mile for business miles from January 1 to June 30, 2026, and 76 cents from July 1, 2026. Keep a log of every working mile, including miles to pickups and between trips.
- Tips. From 2025 to 2028 you can deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tips. The IRS lists rideshare drivers as a qualifying occupation. It lowers income tax only, and the tips must appear on a 1099 form. Details: no tax on tips.
- Quarterly payments. No one withholds tax for you. If you expect to owe $1,000 or more, pay estimated tax; the 2026 dates are April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027. Use our 1099 tax calculator and estimated tax payments guide.
Minimum Pay Laws for Rideshare Drivers
These come from the regulators or the statutes. Most of them pay for time and miles with a rider (or "engaged" time on the way to a pickup and during the trip), so waiting time between trips is not counted.
| Where | 2026 minimum |
|---|---|
| New York City (TLC) | From March 1, 2026: $1.283 per mile + $0.681 per minute for Uber and Lyft trips. Wheelchair-accessible vehicles $1.601 per mile. Out-of-town trips $1.757 per mile + $0.725 per minute. |
| Washington State (L&I) | Trips starting in Seattle: $0.70 per minute + $1.63 per mile with a passenger, or $6.12 per trip if higher. Rest of the state: $0.40 + $1.38, or $3.55. For 2027: Seattle $0.72 + $1.69 or $6.34; rest of state $0.41 + $1.43 or $3.68. |
| Minnesota (Minn. Stat. 181C.03) | $1.28 per mile + $0.31 per minute with a rider, at least $5.00 per ride. From January 1, 2027: $1.33, $0.32 and $5.20. |
| Massachusetts (Attorney General settlement with Uber and Lyft) | $34.48 per engaged hour from January 15, 2026. Engaged time is driving to pick up riders and transporting them. |
| California (Prop 22) | 120% of the applicable minimum wage for engaged time, plus a per-mile amount for engaged miles. With the $16.90 state minimum wage that is $20.28 an hour (our arithmetic), more where a higher local minimum applies. Per mile: $0.36 in 2025 per the State Treasurer; DoorDash's California page lists $0.37 for 2026. Tips do not count toward the guarantee. |
Seattle's own Uber/Lyft pay ordinance no longer applies; Washington State law covers Seattle trips instead. We have not verified pay rules in other states, so check with your state labor department.
Requirements to Drive
From Uber's US requirements page:
- Meet the minimum age to drive in your state.
- At least one year of licensed driving experience in the US (3 years if you are under 25). Some states require an in-state license.
- An eligible 4-door vehicle. Each city has its own vehicle rules.
- A valid US driver's license, registration and proof of insurance if you drive your own car.
- A screening that reviews your driving record and criminal history.
FAQ
How much do Uber drivers make an hour?
Uber does not publish an hourly average. It depends on your city, hours, surge and promotions. In our hypothetical example, $20 an hour of app pay leaves $11.39 an hour after car costs and federal tax.
What percentage does Uber take from drivers?
Uber does not publish a fixed share. It says it keeps the difference between what the rider pays and what the driver earns, excluding tips, tolls and certain fees, and that this changes by trip.
Do Uber drivers keep their tips?
Yes. Uber says drivers always receive 100% of tips. They are still taxable income, but rideshare tips can qualify for the federal tips deduction.
How often do Uber drivers get paid?
Weekly, usually on Thursdays. With Instant Pay you can cash out up to 6 times a day for a fee that varies by market.
How much should an Uber driver set aside for taxes?
It depends on your other income and miles. In our example it was 6.2% of app pay, because the mileage deduction removes much of the profit. Run your own numbers in the 1099 tax calculator.
