How Much Do Uber Eats Drivers Make in 2026? What You Keep After Gas and Taxes
Uber does not publish an average hourly pay for Uber Eats couriers. Its earnings page explains how a delivery fare is built (an upfront fare that includes the base fare and any upfront tip), says couriers keep 100% of tips, and adds that the page "does not guarantee earnings." A minimum earnings guarantee exists only "in some markets," and Uber does not say which ones or how much. Pay in the app is also not what you keep. In our hypothetical example, $20.00 an hour of app pay leaves about $13.21 an hour after car costs and federal tax.

The Short Answer
- No official average. Uber's Uber Eats earnings page gives no hourly, per-delivery or weekly average. It says "Earnings structures may differ by city."
- Upfront fares. Before you accept, the request shows what you will make, the pickup and dropoff, and the estimated time and distance. That fare includes the base fare and any tip the customer added when ordering.
- Tips are yours. Uber says "You keep 100% of the tips you receive." With its tip guarantee, the amount on a request marked "Guaranteed" is the minimum you receive, with a few exceptions such as a cancelled trip.
- Minimum guarantee only in some markets. Uber names no markets and no rate.
- Pay floors by law: New York City ($22.13 an hour before tips), Seattle (PayUp) and California (Prop 22) set minimums for app delivery work.
- What you keep: in our hypothetical example, $20.00 per hour of app pay becomes about $13.21 after car costs and federal tax.
How Uber Eats Pays Couriers
From Uber's "Your earnings, explained" page for couriers, checked on October 20, 2026. Uber's sign-up page sums it up as earnings that "come from base fare, promotions, and tips."
Upfront fares
Uber says fares are "calculated based on the anticipated time and effort for that specific delivery, plus real-time factors in your area." It publishes no per-mile or per-minute rates for delivery and no base fare amount. The fare you see on the request includes the base fare and any upfront tip. Adjustments and any extra tips are added after the trip.
Tips and the tip guarantee
Customers can tip when they order and add more after the delivery. You keep 100% of tips, per Uber. If a request carries the "Guaranteed" badge and the customer later lowers the tip, Uber says it covers the difference.
Promotions
- Quest: extra pay "for completing a certain number of trips within specified criteria." You opt in under Discover in the Driver app.
- Boost+: extra pay "on every delivery trip started and completed in a certain area." Check eligibility in Discover.
Minimum earnings guarantee
"In some markets, couriers are guaranteed a minimum earnings rate for time spent on trips." If you earn less, Uber says it pays the difference automatically. The page does not list the markets or the rate. Note the words "time spent on trips": time waiting for a request is not part of it.
When and how you get paid
| Option | Timing | Cost |

Uber Eats Earnings Calculator
Enter your weekly payout from the Driver app (including tips), hours online and miles driven. It is pre-filled with the hypothetical example below. The full version is our gig earnings calculator.
From App Pay to What You Keep
This example is hypothetical. We picked round numbers to show the math. They are not typical Uber Eats earnings, and Uber publishes no average to compare them with.
Inputs: $500 a week of app pay, of which $150 is tips; 25 hours online; 300 miles a week by car; 48 weeks a year; $10 a week of other costs (phone share, delivery bag); single filer with $40,000 of W-2 wages from a main job. Car cost uses AAA's 2026 figures for gas, maintenance and the extra wear from driving more: 38.72 cents a mile.
| Line | Per year |
|---|---|
| App pay including tips | $24,000.00 |
| Car cost (gas, maintenance, extra wear) | -$5,575.68 |
| Other costs | -$480.00 |
| Federal tax caused by the gig (self-employment + income tax) | -$2,093.02 |
| What you keep | $15,851.30 |
| Per hour online: app pay | $20.00 |
| Per hour: after car and other costs | $14.95 |
| Per hour: what you keep | $13.21 |
Our calculator engine (the same one as the calculator above), 2026 federal rules, 1,200 hours a year. State and local income tax not included.
How the tax line works. Self-employment tax is $1,812.54. Profit for tax purposes is $12,828.00, because the IRS mileage deduction ($10,692.00, using 72.5 cents a mile to June 30 and 76 cents from July 1) is larger than the cash car cost. The example assumes all $7,200.00 of tips qualify for the tips deduction, which lowers income tax but not self-employment tax. The model suggests setting aside 8.7% of app pay, about $523.26 a quarter.
Two things move the real result more than anything else:
- Waiting time. The per-hour figures divide by all hours online. Uber's minimum guarantee, where it exists, covers time on trips. Every hour you wait for a request lowers your real hourly pay.
- Unpaid miles. Driving to the restaurant, back toward busy areas and home after your last delivery costs the same per mile. Log every mile, not only the ones on the request.
Delivering by bike or on foot? The calculator and this example assume a car. Set the car cost to "My own cost per mile" and enter your own figure.
Costs You Pay
- Car, cash basis. AAA's 2026 Your Driving Costs study puts gas plus maintenance, repair and tires at 29.04 cents a mile. Add the extra loss in value from driving more and it is about 38.72 cents. The full cost of owning a new car, at 15,000 miles a year, is 85.75 cents a mile.
- Car, tax basis. The IRS business rate is 72.5 cents a mile for January 1 to June 30, 2026, and 76 cents from July 1, 2026. That is a deduction, not money Uber pays you.
- Cash-out fees. Instant Pay carries a fee that Uber does not list. Weekly deposits have no stated fee.
- Parking and tolls. Deductible on top of the mileage rate, per the IRS.
Taxes for Uber Eats Drivers
Couriers are independent contractors, so no tax is withheld. The IRS says all gig income is taxable, even without a tax form.
- Forms from Uber. Uber's tax page says the 1099-K reports on-trip gross earnings, "the total amount paid by riders and Uber Eats users," and the 1099-NEC reports promotions, referrals and other payments. Under IRS rules a 1099-K is required above $20,000 and more than 200 transactions, and a 1099-NEC at $2,000 for payments made after 2025.
- Self-employment tax: 15.3% on 92.35% of net profit, owed once net earnings reach $400. See self-employment tax 2026.
- Mileage log: record every business mile, including trips to restaurants and between deliveries.
- Tips: for 2025 to 2028 you may deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tips. App-based delivery is a qualifying job, but the tips must appear on a 1099, and the deduction lowers income tax only. Details: no tax on tips 2026.
- Quarterly payments: 2026 due dates are April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027. See estimated tax payments 2026 or run your numbers in the 1099 tax calculator.
Minimum Pay Laws for Delivery Couriers
| Place | 2026 floor | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| New York City | $22.13 an hour, before tips | From the first pay period on or after April 1, 2026 (was $21.44). The city says the rate applies to "both grocery and food delivery workers." |
| Seattle (PayUp) | $0.47 a minute + $0.80 a mile, or $5.34 per offer if higher | For offers that start in Seattle. For 2027 the city lists $0.48 a minute and $5.54 per offer; the per-mile amount is not yet set. |
| California (Prop 22) | 120% of the local minimum wage for active time + $0.37 per active mile | With the $16.90 state minimum wage, $20.28 per active hour where no higher local minimum applies. Tips do not count. |
Sources: NYC DCWP; Seattle Office of Labor Standards; Prop 22 statute and California DIR; Uber's California earnings guarantee help page for the $0.37 per-mile figure (we could not read the State Treasurer's page that publishes it).
In California, Uber's help page says the per-mile amount covers "active miles driven in a vehicle (including motorbikes)," and earnings are checked over a two-week period. If your net earnings fall short, Uber adds a "top-up" payment. We have not verified pay rules for delivery couriers in other states or cities.
Requirements to Deliver
From Uber's US delivery sign-up page:
- Bike or on foot: at least 18, a government-issued ID, and a Social Security number for a background screening.
- Motorbike or scooter: at least 19 and a valid driver's license in your name.
- Car: at least 19 (21 in California and New York State, Uber says), a 2-door or 4-door vehicle and a valid driver's license in your name.
- All US couriers must pass a background screening. In many markets, proof of residency is required.
FAQ
How much does Uber Eats pay per delivery?
Uber does not publish a per-delivery range. Each request shows the upfront fare, which includes the base fare and any upfront tip, before you accept.
How much do Uber Eats drivers make an hour?
Uber publishes no hourly average. Third-party apps such as Gridwise publish estimates from their users, but those are not Uber figures and are usually before car costs and tax.
Do Uber Eats drivers keep all their tips?
Uber says yes: couriers keep 100% of tips. A request marked "Guaranteed" pays at least the amount shown, even if the customer lowers the tip later, with a few exceptions.
Does Uber Eats pay more than DoorDash?
Neither company publishes data that answers that. We compare how each one pays in DoorDash vs Uber Eats pay.
Do I have to pay taxes on Uber Eats income?
Yes. You owe self-employment tax once net earnings reach $400, plus income tax, even if you get no 1099. Mileage and other business costs lower the profit you are taxed on.

Method notes. The worked example comes from our gig calculator engine with the inputs shown. Federal tax is the extra tax the gig income adds on top of the $40,000 job, including self-employment tax, the deduction for half of it, the QBI deduction, the 2026 tips deduction and the IRS mileage deduction. It excludes state and local tax. Uber's tax page still showed the older $600 1099-NEC threshold when we read it; we use the IRS figure.
