How to Make $1,000 Fast: How Many Hours It Really Takes

Most "make $1,000 fast" lists stop at what an app pays per hour. The number that matters is what you keep after gas, wear on your car and taxes. Using the pay rules the platforms publish and our own calculator, keeping $1,000 from delivery or shopping gigs takes roughly 60 to 90 hours of work for someone who also has a regular job. Selling things you already own can be faster, but only if you have about $1,200 worth of items buyers want.

The Short Answer

  • Gig work: at $15 to $25 an hour of app pay, you keep roughly $11 to $17 an hour after car costs and federal tax in our examples, so $1,000 takes 60 to 90 hours.
  • $1,000 in a month means about 14 to 21 hours a week; $1,000 in a week means 60 to 90 hours that week.
  • Selling on eBay: about 12 sales of $100 items, after eBay's fees and your postage, in our example.
  • Few apps publish pay: Amazon says most Flex drivers earn $18 to $25 an hour; Shipt guarantees $16 an hour of its estimated time; most others publish nothing.
  • Taxes: gig income is self-employment income. Set aside roughly 9% to 13% of app pay for federal tax in these examples, more if you earn more elsewhere.

Hours to Keep $1,000

Hypothetical gigApp pay per hourAfter car costsKept after federal taxHours to keep $1,000
Amazon Flex, top of Amazon's stated range ($25/hr)$25.00$19.95$16.6260
Food delivery, $20/hr including tips$20.00$14.95$13.2176
Shipt at its $16 floor, orders running long$17.60$14.41$12.2682
Amazon Flex, bottom of Amazon's stated range ($18/hr)$18.00$12.95$11.2489

Our calculator, for a single filer who also earns $40,000 a year at a regular job, working 25 hours a week for 48 weeks: 12 miles an hour of driving (7.2 for Shipt) at AAA's 2026 operating cost plus wear, $10 a week of other costs, tips counted as qualified tips. Hours rounded. These are examples, not what any platform promises.

Why the after-tax figure matters: every dollar of profit from gig work is subject to 15.3% self-employment tax on 92.35% of it, plus income tax at your bracket, after the mileage deduction. Car costs come off first: AAA puts the 2026 cost of fuel, maintenance and tires at 29 cents a mile for a new car, before insurance and depreciation. Platform pay rules are on our pages for Amazon Flex, Shipt, DoorDash, Uber Eats and Instacart.

Run Your Own Numbers

The calculator below is set to the food delivery example. Change the weekly pay, tips, hours and miles to match what you see in the app, and add your regular job's income so the tax reflects your bracket.

Selling Things You Already Own

If you have things to sell, this can be the quickest route, because there's no car or hourly work involved. On eBay, a hypothetical $100 item with $10 shipping charged and 7% sales tax is a $117.70 sale; eBay's fee is 13.6% of that plus $0.40, or $16.41. You receive $93.59, and after $10 of postage you net $83.59. Reaching $1,000 takes about 12 such sales. Our eBay fee calculator and Etsy fee calculator work out each sale.

$1,000 a Month vs $1,000 a Week

  • An extra $1,000 a month is realistic for many people with a car and evenings or weekends free: about 14 to 21 hours a week in the examples above.
  • $1,000 a week on top of a job is not: 60 to 90 hours of gig work that week. Even full time, the examples keep $11 to $17 an hour.
  • Taxes come later. Gig apps don't withhold tax. Set aside money from each payout and pay quarterly if you'll owe $1,000 or more for the year; our DoorDash taxes guide walks through it, and the 1099 tax calculator gives the amount.

In the Federal Reserve's 2024 survey, 70% of gig workers worked under 5 hours a week, and 31% said they would have trouble making ends meet without gig income. Most people use it as a top-up, not a fast fix.

What to Avoid

  • Anything that charges you to start earning: paid "training," starter kits, multi-level marketing and "work from home" jobs that ask for money up front.
  • Payday loans when what you need is cash, not income: our payday loan guide shows what they really cost.
  • Overdraft-style advances from banking apps cost fees and have to be paid back from your next paycheck; compare them in our banking apps guide before relying on one.
  • Survey and game apps that promise easy money pay little per hour.

Sources & Methodology

Method notes. Every hourly figure is our gig earnings calculator's output for the inputs listed under the table; the calculator uses the 2026 federal tax brackets, self-employment tax, the standard mileage deduction and the tips deduction. App pay inputs use what the platforms say about pay (Amazon's range, Shipt's floor) or a round hypothetical for delivery. State income tax is not included.

FAQ

How can I make $1,000 fast?
With gig work, plan on about 60 to 90 hours to keep $1,000 after car costs and taxes, in our examples. Selling things you already own can be faster: about 12 eBay sales of $100 items in our example.

How many hours does it take to make $1,000?
At $20 an hour of app pay, about 50 hours before costs, but about 76 hours of what you actually keep after car costs and federal tax (our calculator, for someone who also has a $40,000 job).

How can I make an extra $1,000 a month?
About 14 to 21 hours a week of delivery or shopping gigs in our examples, or a mix of gigs and selling. Remember to set aside 9% to 13% of app pay for federal tax.

Not on top of a full-time job for most people: in our examples it would take 60 to 90 hours of gig work a week.

Do I have to pay taxes on gig money?
Yes. All of it is taxable, with or without a 1099, and you owe self-employment tax once net earnings reach $400 for the year.
