Spark Driver Pay in 2026: How Walmart Delivery Drivers Are Paid and What They Keep

Spark Driver, the app Walmart uses for delivery drivers, publishes no hourly rate, no earnings range and no minimum pay. Its pages explain how trip pay is set (distance, order size and extras), that incentives can add to it, and that drivers keep 100% of confirmed customer tips. Each offer shows an estimated amount before you accept. In our hypothetical example, a driver with $20.00 an hour of app pay keeps about $11.70 an hour after car costs and federal tax, because Spark trips can mean a lot of miles.

The Short Answer

  • Pay per trip: Spark says trip earnings depend on distance, order size and extras such as apartment deliveries or heavy items.
  • No published rate or minimum: Spark's earnings and FAQ pages give no hourly figure, range or standing minimum. Each offer lists the estimated amount before you accept.
  • Incentives: lump sum, tiered, per-trip and multi-trip incentives appear at times. They are offers, not a guaranteed wage.
  • Tips: Spark says you keep 100% of confirmed customer tips.
  • Payout: instantly or weekly, depending on the earnings account you set up. OnePay says instant trip payouts are free when it is your primary earnings method.
  • What you keep: in our hypothetical example, $20.00 per hour of app pay becomes about $11.70 after car costs and federal tax.

How Spark Driver Pays

Spark Driver says you earn for each offer you complete, through trip earnings, tips and incentives. You choose which offers to accept, and each one lists the order type, pickup and delivery times, and estimated earnings.

Trip earnings

Spark lists three factors:

  • Distance: "More miles, more earnings." Farther delivery destinations pay more.
  • Size: larger orders with more items pay more.
  • Extras: extra pay for orders that need more help, such as apartment deliveries or heavy items.

Offers include grocery and walmart.com orders, Walmart GoLocal pickups from other stores, pharmacy deliveries, returns, and Shopping & Delivery orders where you shop the list yourself. Spark says no single item in an order weighs more than 60 lbs, and delivery hours run from 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM.

Incentives

Spark's FAQ describes four standard incentive types, each with an example labelled as an example:

  • Lump sum: one extra amount for completing a set number of trips.
  • Tiered: a series of lump sums that grow with each tier.
  • Earn-per-trip: an extra amount for each trip, for example after a set time of day.
  • Multi-trip earnings: if you complete a set number of trips in a period and earn less than a target before tips, Spark covers the difference. Its FAQ example: ten trips in seven days, $180 earned, $20 added to reach $200.

This last type is the closest Spark comes to a guarantee, and it applies only when Spark offers it to you.

Tips

Spark says customers might tip and you keep 100% of confirmed customer tips.

When and how you get paid

Spark says confirmed trip earnings are deposited instantly or weekly into your earnings account, depending on how you set it up. Payout methods come from third-party providers under their own terms.

Spark Driver Earnings Calculator

Enter your weekly payout from the Spark Driver app (including tips), hours logged in and miles driven. It is pre-filled with the hypothetical example below. The full version is our gig earnings calculator.

From App Pay to What You Keep

This example is hypothetical. The inputs are round numbers we chose to show the math. They are not typical Spark earnings, and Spark publishes no average to compare them with.

Inputs: $400 a week of app pay, of which $80 is tips; 20 hours logged in; 350 miles a week; 48 weeks a year; $10 a week of other costs (phone share, supplies); single filer with $40,000 of W-2 wages from a main job. Car cost uses AAA's 2026 figures for gas, maintenance and extra wear: about 38.7 cents a mile.

LinePer year
App pay including tips$19,200.00
Car cost (gas, maintenance, extra wear)-$6,504.96
Other costs-$480.00
Federal tax caused by the gig (self-employment + income tax)-$978.99
What you keep$11,236.05
Per hour logged in: app pay$20.00
Per hour: after car and other costs$12.72
Per hour: what you keep$11.70

Our calculator engine (the same one as the calculator above), 2026 federal rules. State and local income tax not included.

How the tax line works. Self-employment tax is $882.53. The IRS mileage deduction ($12,474.00, at 72.5 cents a mile to June 30 and 76 cents from July 1) is far larger than the cash car cost, so profit for tax purposes is only $6,246.00. The example assumes all $3,840.00 of tips qualify for the 2026 tips deduction. The model suggests setting aside 5.1% of app pay, about $244.75 a quarter.

Why miles matter so much here. Spark pays more for distance, but every mile also costs you. In this example the car takes more than a third of app pay. Two more things lower the real result:

  • Waiting time. Time at the store waiting for an order and time waiting for offers are part of your hours, and per-trip pay does not cover them separately.
  • The drive back. The return trip from a far delivery is not part of the offer. Count it in your miles.

Costs You Pay as a Spark Driver

  • Car, cash basis. AAA's 2026 study puts gas plus maintenance, repair and tires at 29.04 cents a mile; with extra wear, about 38.7 cents. The full cost of owning a new car at 15,000 miles a year is 85.75 cents a mile.
  • Car, tax basis. The IRS business rate is 72.5 cents a mile from January 1 to June 30, 2026, and 76 cents from July 1, 2026.
  • Auto insurance. Spark requires proof of valid auto insurance for each vehicle you use. It is part of your cost of driving.
  • Parking and tolls. Deductible on top of the mileage rate, per the IRS.

Taxes for Spark Drivers

Spark drivers work as independent contractors, so no tax is withheld. The IRS says all gig income is taxable, even without a tax form.

  • Self-employment tax: 15.3% on 92.35% of net profit once net earnings reach $400. See self-employment tax 2026.
  • Forms: Schedule C for income and expenses, Schedule SE for the tax. For payments after 2025 the 1099-NEC threshold is $2,000; a 1099-K is required above $20,000 and more than 200 transactions.
  • Tips: for 2025 to 2028 up to $25,000 of qualified tips can be deducted. Delivery drivers, including app-based ones, are on the IRS list of qualifying jobs, but the tips must appear on a 1099 and the deduction lowers income tax only. See no tax on tips 2026.
  • Quarterly payments: 2026 due dates are April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027. See estimated tax payments 2026 or the 1099 tax calculator.

Minimum Pay Laws and Spark

Spark's pages do not mention any local pay law. Here is what the regulators say, and what we could not confirm:

  • New York City. The $22.13 an hour minimum (before tips, from April 1, 2026) covers restaurant apps and third-party grocery delivery services; the city's notice names Instacart and Shipt as examples, not Walmart. The Department of Consumer and Worker Protection says other apps are not yet required to pay it and that it will set a rate for all delivery apps in early 2027.
  • California. Prop 22 sets a floor for app-based delivery drivers: 120% of the applicable minimum wage for engaged time plus a per-mile amount. Spark's pages do not say whether or how it applies to Spark offers.
  • Seattle. The PayUp ordinance sets 2026 minimums of $0.47 a minute plus $0.80 a mile, or $5.34 per offer, for "certain app-based workers". The city's page does not list covered companies.

If you drive in one of these places, check the app's pay details and the regulator's page. Elsewhere, the offer amount shown before you accept is the only figure you can rely on.

Requirements to Start

Spark Driver says you must:

  • be 18 or older and authorized to work as an independent contractor in the U.S.;
  • have an unexpired, valid REAL ID-compliant or driver's license issued by a U.S. state, and a Social Security card;
  • verify your identity with that license and a selfie;
  • show proof of valid auto insurance for the vehicle you will use;
  • have a clean and reliable car. Motorcycles, motorized bicycles and scooters are not suitable, per Spark.

Spark says background screening may include motor vehicle records and criminal checks, with results typically in 1-7 business days.

FAQ

How much does Spark Driver pay per hour?
Spark does not publish an hourly rate or average. Pay is per trip, based on distance, order size and extras, plus incentives and tips. Third-party apps such as Gridwise publish estimates from their users, but those are not Spark figures.

Does Spark Driver have a minimum pay?
Not a standing one on its pages. The only guarantee Spark describes is the occasional multi-trip incentive that tops up your earnings to a target.

Do Spark drivers keep their tips?
Spark says drivers keep 100% of confirmed customer tips. With OnePay, tips arrive 24-48 hours after the trip.

How do Spark drivers get paid?
Instantly or weekly into the earnings account you set up. OnePay says instant trip payouts are free when it is your primary earnings method. Spark's own pages name no other provider, so check fees in the app.

Do I pay taxes on Spark Driver income?
Yes. You owe self-employment tax once net earnings reach $400, plus income tax. Keep a log of business miles, since the IRS mileage rate is deductible.

Sources & Methodology

All sources were checked on 2026-10-18. We have not driven for Spark and have no earnings data of our own; every Spark figure is attributed to Spark Driver or OnePay.

Method notes. The worked example comes from our gig calculator engine with the inputs shown. Federal tax is the extra tax the gig income adds on top of the $40,000 job, including self-employment tax, the 2026 tips deduction and the IRS mileage deduction. It excludes state and local tax. Some third-party sites name other payout providers and fees for Spark; we could not find them on Spark's or Walmart's own pages, so we left them out.
